As a deputy #fire chief I had to constantly balance available time, money and resources to ensure that our special operations teams were properly trained and prepared for low frequency, high impact missions. It wasn't always easy to see or justify the importance of those investments. After #HurricaneHelene, the picture is much clearer now. I'm very proud of these people, many of whom I got to witness develop as young #firefighters into the leaders they are today. https://lnkd.in/ecgBJeFD #waterrescue #technicalrescue

Michael Dugan discusses firefighters' need for air in high rise and big box fires and the labor required to bring air to the scene. Rural America is a target for industrial warehouses and distribution centers consuming hundreds of acres available for development. As a firefighter - think about fire in a 750,000 square feet horizontal structure. Despite sprinklers being the first response to a fire, there is still the need for rescue and emergency operations for the people who may be inside, and eventually, overhaul. If firefighters are not on air - at any time - at any scene - they are at risk for toxic exposures. Don't take that risk. Start the Conversation. ⛑️Clara Barton's Inspiration and its Connection to Industrial Safety⛑️ Clara Barton, a key figure in the history of the Red Cross, founded the American Red Cross in 1881, inspired by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). During the American Civil War, Barton dedicated herself to caring for wounded soldiers, establishing a legacy of compassion and efficiency in emergency response. 🔴The connection between the Red Cross and industrial safety is clear: both focus on protection and assistance during emergencies and disasters. In industrial safety, we apply these principles in preparing and responding to emergencies in the workplace, including first aid, evacuations, and crisis management.🔴 The Red Cross inspires us to implement safety practices that prevent accidents and mitigate damage, ensuring the well-being and protection of people. In our company, we strive to follow this model, ensuring a safe and prepared work environment for any eventuality. #IndustrialSafety #RedCross #Emergencies #WorkplaceProtection #SafetyFirst #IndustrialSafety #WorkplaceSafety #Contractor #ContractorSafety #ArizonaContractors #TritecSafety #SafetyAlways #AutomativeIndustry

Good to see them matching solid performing water sources with the new larger copters.
When battling larger, faster-burning, and more frequent wildfires that are our reality, time matters to the second, precision matters to the foot, and volume of water matters to the gallon. Monday, we bolstered our wildfire firefighting arsenal with a dedicated helicopter water source, strategically located in Aliso Viejo. The result of the collaboration and support of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, the Aliso Viejo Community Association, the Moulton Niguel Water District, and the OCFA Board of Directors, this HeloPod is an example of what can happen when we work together for our communities, for the people we are sworn to serve, and the firefighters on the front lines. We are grateful for our partners who continue to support us as we mitigate the threat of wildfires to our communities and around California. #WildlandFirefighter #AirOps #Helicopter

I genuinely wonder exactly how much organizational learning is generated from such meetings. I have been fortunate enough to work closely and extensively with Australian fire and rescue services over the last decade or so, and also with their incredible State Emergency Services. Queensland is 7-8 times larger than the UK and they have a single emergency response agency. England alone has 44 fire and rescue services and 11 ambulance services. Wouldn’t mergers of UK fire and rescue services make for a leaner, more efficient and effective front line response? Would it reduce budgets and the need for investment in (for example) 44 brand brand new, state of the art training centres? Would it more easily promote best practices and the development of true subject matter expertise? Perhaps more critically, would it help with the current challenges the sector faces? I do hope the UKFRs can genuinely learn from other parts of the world. https://lnkd.in/e3zzbwgR
This week London Fire Commissioner Andy Roe and Deputy Commissioner Charlie Pugsley had the pleasure of meeting with Michelle Cowling, Deputy Commissioner of Operations for Fire Rescue Victoria, Australia. Michelle previously worked for 25 years in Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, where she was one of the first woman urban firefighters in Queensland. The visit was a fantastic chance to learn from each other, and discuss the new equipment and methods that our services are using. We also took the opportunity to talk about diversity and culture in fire and rescue services, and emerging risks like electrical vehicles and our ChargeSafe campaign. Thank you to Michelle for joining us.

Ranchers: I guess it's time that thinking through this horrific scenario in the video needs to be part of our future fire planning. If you are fleeing a fast-burning forest fire (or, for that matter, a flood), make sure to open your gates/cut your fences for your livestock so they can run too. We all know they might not make it to the gate in time, so figure out the most likely flight paths and be ready and practiced to cut the fences in those places. (On the one hand, I think some of our brave cows would push through barb wire more than these elk can get through their fencing... on the other hand, I think the fence will be easy to cross once the posts burn... but unlike the branches and cut-on-location posts my grandfather used for fence posts, most posts are treated these days, so the posts are probably more fire-resistant than the animals... the last thing any of us want to see is a barbecued herd beside a line of treated fence posts.) We might not be able to save them all, but a little planning and forethought for emergencies means that maybe we can do our best to save as many as we can and do our best. If you're in a flood zone, make sure they can get to the high ground. If you're in a fire zone, consult a fire expert. How are prevailing winds and land patterns likely to steer a fire? Hm, I wonder if fire experts know that kind of thing, where a fire will go. I am sure it's not as predictable as a flood. I need to learn more. <note: I do not agree "fossil fuel companies" caused this problem as the original post said, I'm sharing this for the video and to discuss ranch planning -- all of us who drive cars and have air conditioning jacked up this summer, use plastics, etc., and, particularly, who vote for governments who reduce fire funding like Alberta's did last year, are in this together. I seek not to lay blame but encourage future planning and preparedness.>
Chris Sharpe, a firefighter, captured these videos of elk from a high-fenced ranch frantically running for safety. It's not just humans that suffer because of the crises fossil fuels companies have created. No time to wait. #ActOnClimate

🚒 Earlier this week, more than 80 Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters managed to get the upper hand on a large structural fire at Revesby in Sydney’s south-west. Despite the challenging conditions, crews successfully prevented the fire from spreading to neighboring properties. Specialist HAZMAT teams were on site, monitoring air quality, and residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed until the fire was fully extinguished. Situations like these highlight the critical need for a robust emergency plan. Ensure your workplace is prepared for any emergency with a comprehensive and tested plan. https://lnkd.in/gibJb3kx Thanks to FRNSW for their dedication and hard work in managing this complex situation. 🎥 Fire and Rescue NSW #FRNSW #FireSafety #EmergencyResponse #RevesbyFire #CommunitySafety #EmergencyPreparedness #WorkplaceSafety
