Concerns rise over low participation in under 21 year old truck driver apprenticeship program. Since its launch in July 2022, only 113 motor carriers have applied, falling far short of the expected 1,000 carriers and 3,000 drivers. The initiative has faced controversy from the beginning. Opponents cite concerns over safety and argue that the root of driver shortages lies in pay and working conditions, not age restrictions. Despite these challenges, the Biden administration sees apprenticeships as a vital solution to address the ongoing truck driver shortage. To boost participation, recent legislative changes remove certain restrictions on the program, such as mandatory inward-facing cameras in trucks. Will these adjustments lead to increased engagement? https://hubs.li/Q02sfmKG0

According to a notice scheduled to be published in the Federal Register tomorrow (5/14), FMCSA is rescinding the requirements that carriers wishing to participate in the under-21 Safe Driver Apprenticeship Pilot Program (1) have inward facing cameras installed; and (2) register their apprenticeship program with the Department of Labor. These changes stem from Congress's directive in its March 9, 2024 Consolidated Appropriations Act that FMCSA remove these requirements to help bolster voluntary participation in the program. The inward-facing camera and DOL apprenticeship registration requirements were widely derided by many in the industry, and almost certainly contributed to the extremely low participation numbers to date. Accident repair bodyshops in the UK. One major difficulty is getting and retaining staff. Just been reading about government apprenticeship funding. Bit of a minefield to negotiate but there are grants to help with the cost of training apprentices. It’s an investment in your future staffing and will surely reward you with another loyal member of staff. This is worth looking into if you are not already employing apprentices. Suggestion to Governments - enlarge, simplify and publicise the schemes. Country needs more qualified staff.

Motor carriers should consider ways to improve entry-level driver training initiatives, such as Registered Apprenticeships. Drivers should welcome ongoing training, such as outward and inward-facing camera technologies, which are used as a way to enhance driver skills and capabilities. Examples of Successful Hybrid apprenticeship Programs Several successful hybrid apprenticeship programs have been implemented across the United States. For instance, the BMW Rising Scholars program allows high school seniors to work part-time at BMW Manufacturing while attending school. develop career-ready skills in advanced manufacturing through a combination of paid on-the-job training and college-level classroom instruction. Other examples include Siemens, which leverages its apprenticeship program to develop talent for roles in advanced manufacturing and engineering, recently launched an Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Registered Apprenticeship program at its manufacturing hub in North Carolina, Yellow Corporation committed to developing new dockworker and truck mechanic Registered Apprenticeship programs and launching initiatives to determine ways its Registered Apprenticeship Driving Academies can introduce more women and people of color to truck driving careers. This builds on their establishment of 20 Registered Apprenticeship Driving Academies over the past two years, in partnership with Teamsters, and their commitment to hire 1,000 truck driver apprentices.

If you're only hiring and hoping, you're not doing enough. Building successful companies means demonstrating support for growth of crafts skills and professionalism. We all need to invest in that progress. This is one of the core priorities in the collaboration between our unions and our partner employers.

Achieving small milestones leads to a lifetime of accomplishments. I have had the privilege of observing the development of Romeo Coreas and Jose Merino over the past few years, which culminated this week in their successful completion of the INSTALL certifications. I am filled with pride seeing them progress from inexperienced apprentices to skilled installers. As they continue their final year of apprenticeship, I hope they share my confidence in their abilities. #nasctf #unioncarpenters #uniontraining #unionstrong #UBCtraining

As the largest workforce education provider for the electronics manufacturing industry, IPC applauds U.S. President Joe Biden's recent Executive Order aimed at expanding apprenticeships across the United States. We think it's a helpful step forward to direct the federal government to expand apprenticeships within its own ranks and incentivize industry participation through procurement and grant incentives. This action aligns with IPC's ongoing efforts and follows the U.S. Department of Labor's approval last November of IPC's National Program Standards of Apprenticeship – a historic milestone for the U.S. electronics manufacturing industry. Closing the workforce gap with speed and scale is crucial, particularly in an industry where tens of thousands of new workers will be needed over the next decade. Stay tuned for more IPC initiatives in this area, coming soon. Check out the White House fact sheet for more information. https://lnkd.in/ee528h4E
