Everyone ranted & raved about last year's Keynote Speaker (rightfully so)... But there's competition this year. Hellah Sidibe will share his light with attendees of the 2025 Transform Dental Sleep Symposium. Hellah is the embodiment of positivity, athleticism, and community leadership. He grew up playing soccer barefoot on dirt fields in Mali, West Africa, where the focus of sport was camaraderie. His method of using action, content, and events to build friendships and drive change defines Hellah’s career as a runner and wildly popular running community leader. A run streaker, Hellah has run every single day since May 15, 2017. His initial goal was to run just 10 minutes daily for two weeks—no excuses—to overcome his dislike of the sport, which had been made un-fun by years of rigorous, high level soccer training. “I was afraid of it, and I wanted to hold myself accountable,” he said. As his streak extended from weeks to years, Hellah has built a large social following. Folks clearly find meaning in his daily effort and gear knowledge and have joined him in his pursuits. Hellah turned his everyday commitment into a historical record in 2021 when he became the first black man to solo run across America: 3,061 miles, 14 states, 84 days. He pledged his run to the nonprofit Soles4Souls and raised over $50,000 to provide shoes for those in need. Today, he lives in New Jersey and uses his public platform to advocate for societal progress through running. Once asked why he trains the way he does, Hellah answered, “To be the best, man.” He just wants to be the very best he can personally be—and he wants to help others do the same. And though his personal path is unique, his sentiment and warmth resonate with all who cross his path. In short, Hellah’s approach to life is infectious—and his journey is just beginning.

You Gotta Watch the Tape (Like Eli Manning) One time I had an event...But the next morning I woke up a little concerned BECAUSE we only got good feedback. See, I was at a fundraising event hosted by Derek Jeter's foundation, Turn 2, a couple of years ago, which helps kids lead healthy lifestyles. Derek's mom Dot was there; she helps run the foundation. Dot told me that every year after they've finished putting on the event, the people at Turn 2 sit down together and figure out what went wrong, or what they could have done better. It doesn't matter if everything seems to have gone off without a hitch; they always sit down the next day and try to find out what could have been better. That's how that event - always really great - manages to improve every year. If you want to get better at something, you have to look for feedback. You have to create the feedback if there is none. You have to undergo self-analysis. You have to be critical with yourself. You have to be tough on yourself. To a point, of course. But you gotta do it. That's the only way to get better. It's easy to be self-critical when something you've worked on fails or performs poorly. In those cases, you're kind of forced into self-examination. But in order to progress and get better, it's just as crucial to give yourself an audit after a win as it is after a tie. Eli Manning once told me that after a game is over, one of the first things he does is watch the game tape. "Even if you win?" I asked him. "Yes," he said. "Because I still want to learn. Especially when it's fresh in my mind." I've heard Tom Brady is the same way. After a big playoff win, he'll race to the team facility to find out what he did wrong. Success is nice, but if you want to keep getting better, you gotta watch that tape!

For those needing an immediate 30% income tax deduction for 2024, my Barron’s article details the opportunity presented by falling interest rates and how an Optimized CLAT (OCLAT) can benefit philanthropic high-earning Americans. “OCLATs can help pro athletes, people selling their businesses, and high-net-worth individuals achieve their financial and philanthropic goals. If executed well, this strategy can deliver 2-3x the initial invested sum at the end of its term." https://lnkd.in/gCYiJrkN

I recently learned an incredibly valuable lesson from my son. We sat down for dinner and went around the table talking about what happened in our lives that day. When we asked Finn how his day went, he mentioned that they had cross-country trials at school. He mentioned that he came last, and I could see he was a little deflated by that. He said the teacher told them that it was a competition, and he really didn’t want to compete. Finn does not enjoy competition; he prefers running with his friends and making them laugh We explained that competition was a part of what sport is about, as well as participation, and that it’s okay if he doesn't want to compete. We moved on. That weekend, he was selling fruit (as he usually does) at our local market. He had his stand set up and ready to go, and then a young girl popped her stand up next to his to sell cupcakes to raise money for a school field trip. So instead of competing against her to make the most sales, Finn did something totally different. He helped her sell her cupcakes. He went as far as screaming, “Last cupcake for a primary school’s field trip for sale here!” Now, his sales weren’t the greatest that weekend, but he helped a fellow young entrepreneur sell out in less than 2 hours. What lesson did this teach me? Competition is not always the answer. Sometimes we simply need to collaborate and work together. #collaboration #lesson #leadership #highperformance

We like to say that it is the people who make BOEC special due largely to one similarity, an indelible passion for what we do. Board member Gurney Sloan describes this sentiment from his position on the board. “During my career, I’ve seen nonprofits succeed and fail. Assuming a board candidate has the credentials, such as a background in fundraising, governance, law, or whatever, the most important quality after that is passion for the cause. If joining a board is a “hell yes” and nothing less than that, the rest will take care of itself.” #nonprofitleadership #boecadaptive #boardmember #outdooreducation https://lnkd.in/eeRYZtEB

Ten years ago, I was asked to go back to my alma mater and speak to a class about my experiences in my first professional season, what it entails and the business aspect of the game. I remember walking away from that group thinking, "I would love to do this when I'm done playing, but there's no way you can make a living speaking to others." Ignorance is bliss. Last week I delivered two keynote speeches to more than 2500 people across the two evenings. The first, for a corporate fundraiser, the other to a dinner for 23 schools. Both nights consisted of the same theme: what it means to be a PRO and how winning in every part of your life brings the success in the areas you want it most. Ten years later and that ignorant young man is doing what he loves for a living: not only inspiring but giving the tools to helping others overcome their own battles. As I reflect, there are two major themes that continues to present themselves to me: 1. If there's something you truly want in the world, it is attainable, you just have to be brave enough to go and get it. 2. Don't try to map everything out because life is going to happen the way it is meant for you. The harder we fight it, the less we are capable of seeing. Dream big. Take action. Enjoy the journey.
