What if we told you that 1 in 4 high school kids attempted suicide in the past year? Maybe you’d wonder how this terrifying epidemic could really be happening in our schools. Or you might be angry that we’re not doing more to help these kids. Now, what if we told you that the 1 in 4 number didn’t apply to all high schoolers— just trans kids? A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has revealed shocking data about the realities of being a #transgender+ high school student in America, finding that “Transgender and questioning students experienced a higher prevalence of violence, poor mental health, [suicidality], unstable housing, and [lower] school connectedness than their cisgender peers.” 🚨 This is an urgent crisis. Just because this statistic reflects the experiences of trans and gender-questioning youth doesn’t make it any less heartbreaking. These are our children—each one deserving of the same support, protection, and care as any other student. We cannot stand by and allow trans kids to suffer silently while facing a crisis that, for many, is completely overlooked. 🕓 Every 32 hours, a transgender+ or gender-questioning child attempts to take their own life. As parents, teachers, family and friends, we must act. We must bring our communities, our schools, and our leaders together to solve this crisis and create safe and welcoming environments where every child—regardless of their gender identity—can thrive. The time to act is now. #EndTransHate #ProtectOurKids #MentalHealthMatters
Where's the 😭 reaction emoji when you need it? This is not only shocking but so deeply saddening. How can the experience of trans youth be so bad that they feel this is their only option? We need more love, support and understanding for each other on a human level to stop this happening. #EndTransHate
