Our Executive Director, Ann de Ste Croix, spoke with Jeff Douglas on CBC Mainstreet to discuss the ongoing epidemic of intimate partner violence in Nova Scotia, and the supports provided by THANS' 12 member organizations. "This year, THANS member organizations supported approximately 4600 women and children experiencing violence, and that number is expected to increase to 5000 by the end of 2024, as there is typically an increase in demand for services around the holidays" Listen Here: https://lnkd.in/eGU-eKrE

Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and the first day of the 16 days of Activism for Gender-Based Violence. Since 1990, there have been over 1,020 femicide victims in Ontario. According to the Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability, there have been 242 deaths of women and girls in Canada since November 22 or approximately one every 48 hours. Pictured above are individuals who lost their lives all too soon from the 2022-23 OAITH report. In September 2023, our collective advocacy efforts led the Niagara Region to declare Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) an epidemic. Our sector hopes that this will lead to future resources and services like Gillian's Place, which are crucial for ensuring the safety of survivors in Niagara. We can and must do better. Let's work together, advocate, educate and push for a future free from violence and abuse. * For those in need of support, or friends or family seeking advice on how to help a loved one, call or text our 24/7 support line: 905.684.8331.

Every year, around 10 million people become victims of domestic violence, which equates to just about 20 people every minute. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been in an abusive relationship, while 1 in 5 women and 1 in 7 men have faced severe physical violence. As many as 3 out of 4 Americans know of another person that has, or is being abused by another individual, but a lot of times nothing is done about it. A woman is assaulted or beaten every 9 seconds. And the list, sadly, goes on. SPAN has been working tirelessly to help survivors of domestic violence overcome any obstacles in their path to healing, hope, and new opportunity through comprehensive support, advocacy, education, and community organizing. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and your support is more crucial than ever as domestic violence rates continue to rise and government funding faces further cuts, we need to stand together. With your help, we can continue to empower survivors, raise awareness, and drive change in our communities. Together, we can make a difference.

Commending Jane Gilmore for her insightful article focusing on the real issues surrounding domestic violence. commenting on Waleed Aly’s views, offers a compelling comparison between community responses to natural disasters and the collective effort needed to address domestic violence. Her analogy underscores that everyone has a role in proactive community involvement, and it isn’t about assigning blame to all, but about everyone participating in the solution. Her focus on the pervasive myths surrounding domestic violence among young men highlights a critical gap in awareness and perception. It’s insightful how she relates this to the broader need for societal awareness and action—just as communities naturally come together to manage a fire threat through shared responsibility and various resources, there should be a similar communal approach to preventing domestic violence. Her point about changing young men's perceptions and the need for inclusive, comprehensive prevention strategies resonated with me. The call for empathy and understanding, paired with actionable knowledge, is vital for moving from passive acknowledgment of the issue to active, effective participation in its solution. This thought provoking article is a very important reminder that everyone, particularly men, has a critical role in creating safer communities. https://lnkd.in/gjiaj3WG

Every year, one billion children are victims of cruel acts of violence. That’s one in two children on the planet 🌐🚸❌ Today, Family for Every Child is joining forces with Ending Violence Against Children in the global campaign "Childhood in Our Hands" – and the 100 day countdown has officially begun! 30 July marks 100 days until the first-ever Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children, set to take place in Colombia this coming November. Together, we're calling world leaders to deliver a breakthrough for the billion children and young people affected by violence. Violence damages the childhoods of today and societies of tomorrow. We are the first generation with the knowledge, and the power, to ensure more children are protected. All governments must recognise this mammoth responsibility and opportunity; to change the lives, and futures, of half the world’s children, who are victims of violence. You can get involved too – call on your local ministers to attend this global meetup and take action at the first-ever Conference on Ending Violence Against Children this November.
