Thank you to Len Pierre for his workshop today on Decolonizing Workplace Practices. As we get closer to National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, I appreciated the truth-telling discussion and authenticity. Len also noted his YouTube video on Indigenous Cultural Appropriation vs. Appreciation with Marissa McIntyre which answers some questions I had about what is appropriate in my work and personal spaces. Indigenous Peoples Day is a day of celebration and protest; a day of cultural recognition and historical reclamation. On Monday, October 14th, we honor not only our ancestors and all they fought for, but our relatives across Turtle Island and the battles they continue to face while securing a brighter future for the next generation. There are many ways to participate in Indigenous Peoples Day, the most important of which is continuing to fight for the rights, liberties, and sovereignty of Indigenous peoples. Other ways to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day are: ✊🏽 showing up to local Indigenous-led events; 📖 learning the names and history of local tribes; 🌱 advocating for climate action and justice; 📢 amplifying Indigenous voices and causes; 📽️ supporting Indigenous artists by buying their art, reading their books, watching their films, and listening to their music... What are you doing to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day 2024?

Today, we recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day, a celebration of the history, culture, and contributions of Native peoples across North America and beyond. This day is an opportunity to reflect on the resilience of Indigenous communities, who have preserved their traditions, languages, and cultural identity despite centuries of colonization and displacement. Indigenous Peoples' Day serves as both a reminder of the past and a celebration of the present. It encourages us to reflect on the impact of colonial history, including the legacy of Christopher Columbus, while honoring the vibrant cultures and traditions that continue to thrive today. From the Cherokee to the Navajo, Lakota, and countless other nations, Indigenous communities offer rich artistic, spiritual, and linguistic traditions. Their relationship with the land—rooted in stewardship, sustainability, and respect for nature—continues to inspire modern environmental practices and activism. Many states, cities, and organizations across the U.S. have embraced this holiday as a meaningful way to acknowledge historical injustices, while amplifying Indigenous voices and perspectives. The move towards celebrating Indigenous Peoples' Day reflects a shift toward healing and inclusion. Let's use this day to not only celebrate Indigenous heritage but also to educate ourselves about the rich histories that existed long before European arrival. This is a day for supporting Indigenous businesses, attending cultural events, and amplifying Indigenous-led initiatives for social and environmental justice. Today and every day, may we honor Indigenous voices, acknowledge past injustices, and strive to build a future rooted in equity and respect. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #IndigenousHeritage #CulturalAppreciation #HistoryMatters #LandAcknowledgment

Continue to lead through empathy, compassion, and love. We have always been this way. Channel the lifestyle our ancestors lived. Fuel your body with food of life. 🫘🍅🥬 Nourish our ears with sounds of nature. Discipline the mind with thoughts of presentness. And heal the body through ancestral methodology. Treat each with the love, understanding, and acceptance we have never received from our oppressors. Break the curse and give each other what we need. It's time! #happyindigenousday #mindfulness #perfomancemindset

Celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day is essential because it honors the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous communities while acknowledging the harm caused by colonization. This day provides an opportunity to correct the historical narrative, shifting the focus from glorifying explorers to recognizing the resilience and sovereignty of Native peoples. It promotes awareness of the injustices Indigenous communities have endured, fostering empathy and understanding. By celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day, we not only uplift marginalized voices but also inspire future generations to build inclusive communities rooted in respect, equity, and cultural appreciation.
