#microbiome #autism #drug #discovery #study #neurodevelopmental #disorder #neuroscience, #RutgersHealth An analysis of how brains with different forms of autism develop has revealed common underlying mechanisms that may respond to existing medications. For the study, Rutgers Health researchers used induced pluripotent stem cells to transform the blood cells of people with both genetic and idiopathic autism spectrum disorder (ASD) into early brain cells called neural precursor cells. My first paper was published earlier this month under the mentorship of Norah Al-Azzam, PhD. In our study, we uncovered that CHMP7 mislocalization—a known precursor of sporadic ALS—can be inhibited by upregulating SmD1 expression. Using eCLIP computational analysis, I identified that CHMP7 primarily binds to the CDS and 5′UTRs of several protein-coding genes. Gene Set Enrichment Analysis revealed that these genes are predominantly associated with splicing, providing the foundation for the rest of our experiments. This discovery highlights a potentially druggable step for ALS treatment. However, breakthroughs like this are only possible because of years of basic science that laid the groundwork. To develop treatments not just for ALS but for countless other diseases without effective treatments, sustained funding for organizations like the NIH and NSF is crucial. We must prioritize basic research even when the outcomes are uncertain.
Researchers at UC San Diego and colleagues have identified a key pathway leading to neurodegeneration in early stages of ALS, hinting at the potential for short-circuiting the progression of the fatal disease if diagnosed early. Learn more 🔗 https://bit.ly/3YNezdR #Neuroscience #StemCells #ALS
