The Right to Health Report for Kenya's 4th UPR Cycle convened by KELIN highlights significant challenges and opportunities for achieving the right to health, especially concerning HIV/AIDS. Key statistics reveal that while HIV prevalence decreased from 4.76% in 2020 to 3.7% in 2023, key populations, including sex workers and transgender individuals, still face a 70% share of new HIV infections, reflecting gaps in equitable service delivery. Only 19.9% of Kenyans were insured under the NHIF, indicating financial barriers to health access. To address these issues, the report recommends increasing health budgets to at least 15% of the national budget as per the Abuja Declaration, expanding HIV prevention and treatment services for vulnerable populations, and ensuring universal health coverage through equity-driven implementation of the new Social Health Insurance Fund. Integrating these recommendations with a focus on reducing stigma and discrimination is essential to uphold health as a fundamental human right.
On this #WorldAIDSDay2024, as members of the Right to Health thematic group in the 4th Cycle of the Universal Periodic Review, we emphasize the critical need to uphold health as an economic and social right for all. This year's theme, "Taking the Rights Way: My Health, My Right," reminds us that equitable access to HIV prevention, treatment, and care services is a matter of justice. With human rights at the centre, with communities in the lead, the world can end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Let us reaffirm our commitment to ensuring inclusive healthcare systems, addressing stigma, and protecting vulnerable populations and the rights of every person, so that no one is left behind in the fight against HIV/AIDS. #hivaids #PuttingPeopleFirst #healthcare
