📰 Research Article of the Week... Systematization Toward a Tourism Collaboration Network Grounded in Research-Based Learning. Lessons Learned from an International Project in Ecuador Published online: 23 Oct 2024 Abstract This article presents the systematization of an international research project between the Universities of Cuenca, Ecuador, and KU Leuven, Belgium, and how records were kept of the process and lessons learned beyond the specific content and results of the project. The project focuses on research-based learning as an approach to support tourism as a means of sustainable development in southern Ecuador. The initiative encourages the application of critical thinking and involves professors, students, communities, and decision-makers. The systematization process relies on verification documents, such as minutes, reports, and recordings, which evidence the decision-making and implementation processes to elaborate the project successfully over several years. Through the systematization, it is evident how learning and cooperation relationships have been produced and how a platform has been developed to facilitate research, dissemination and transfer. Therefore, the experiences obtained through this systematization are valuable and transferable to other development projects and research teams. As a recent graduate from the European Business Institute of Luxembourg and a product of Dr. James Mulli ‘s lectures. I am thrilled to share my testimony of how my MBA thesis on "The Effects of Climate on the Tourism Industry in Botswana: a case in Chobe region" has had a significant impact beyond the classroom. Since completing my thesis, I have been approached by climate change advocates and organizations who have taken an interest in my research and findings. I have been invited to participate in discussion panels, conferences, and events focused on climate change and its impact on the tourism industry. My thesis has allowed me to contribute valuable insights and expertise to these discussions, and I have been able to engage with industry professionals, policymakers, and fellow researchers on this critical issue. The attention and recognition my thesis has garnered have opened up new opportunities for me to continue exploring and addressing the intersection of climate change and the tourism industry. I am excited about the potential for further collaboration, research projects, and advocacy efforts that may arise from my thesis work. I am grateful for the platform that my thesis has provided me and the doors it has opened for me to make a meaningful impact in the field of sustainable tourism and climate change. A delegation from Mercer University in Georgia, USA, recently embarked on a short-term study program with CHIRAG. The group conducted in-depth interviews with community beneficiaries and CHIRAG's staff. This collaborative initiative aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the multifaceted impacts of tourism on local communities. Through in-depth interviews with CHIRAG beneficiaries and staff, the students gained valuable insights into the positive and negative consequences of tourism development. The students identified economic benefits, likely due to increased tourism activity, and on the other side water shortages and land sales emerged as key concerns for local residents. However, they also discovered significant concerns regarding environmental issues like pollution, wildfires, and increased traffic congestion. CHIRAG recognizes the importance of international perspectives and actively encourages student engagement. The team from Mercer University shared their insightful recommendations on how to address these challenges. Their valuable contributions will be instrumental in shaping CHIRAG's future strategies for promoting sustainable tourism development that prioritizes the well-being of both local communities and the environment. 💡📄 During their projects, researchers funded by the 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨-𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐬 of Innoviris had the opportunity to write a policy brief to encourage measures in their research domain. In the following weeks, we will share them on this page. 🔎 The first project is 𝐂𝐚𝐩-𝐒𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐓, working on how to sustain tourism employment in ongoing digitalisation of the industry. Discover their policy recommendations 👇 https://lnkd.in/gwdvW2cC Conclusions: With its systemic approach Cap-SMART developed knowledge on how digitalisation affects the tourist destination system from the perspective of different stakeholders, i.e., workers, managers, education providers and destination management stakeholders. Although its results should be corroborated by additional studies, the project still provides insights into how the tourism system is evolving in Brussels-Capital Region and is likely to evolve by the 2030s. Tourism stakeholders are aware of digitalisation-led challenges and express needs for reliable information on emerging technologies and for regular updates on adoption patterns and the skills that will be required to adapt. Practitioners also stressed that digitalisation should not be the core focus of destination management strategies, but a means towards an end. This end remains to be defined, though. Growth was mentioned just like sustainability. I am thrilled to share that Centre for Business and Economic Research, IBA-SESS has awarded me a competitive grant to complete my undergraduate thesis on the topic of “Impacts of Tourism on Host Communities: Socio-Cultural Transformation in Central Hunza”. This is a primary, qualitative research. It examines how tourism is contributing to the socio-cultural transformation in central Hunza and why are certain aspects of the culture become vulnerable to change due to tourism. I am establishing this through exploring the changes in the society, transformation in the mode of income, and environmental changes. My research is motivated by the need to talk about impacts of tourism other than positive economic impacts. There are serious negative consequences of tourism the region has started to feel. However, they are either overshadowed by the income generation or brushed aside. Through this research I aim to go deeper than just the tangible aspects in play. Meet BUV Researchers 🌟    Today, we are excited to introduce Dr Simon Kimber, a Senior Lecturer at BUV and Head of the Centre for Postgraduate Studies. Dr. Kimber brings extensive expertise in teaching research methods and international business management, with a particular research focus on tourism, especially within the realm of Chinese tourism studies.  Dr Kimber’s publications revolve around the rise of Asian backpacker tourism and the leisure uses of autonomous vehicles. He has explored how young Chinese independent travelers post on social media, emphasizing the performative aspects of tourism in the digital age. He is currently working with colleagues from Shanghai Normal University on the rise of Chinese volunteer tourism.  Whilst many young western people take gap years in their studies, and volunteer for charities, little is known about this phenomenon from an Asian or Chinese perspective. Much of his research utilizes ethnographic and qualitative research methodologies. 💡 Dr. Simon shared about his work:  “My research aims to uncover how tourism experiences are shaped by culture and technology, particularly in the context of social media. Exploring these dynamics not only sheds light on the motivations and behaviors of young travelers but also provides insights into how tourism evolves with each generation.” For students who are interested in doing research, Dr. Simon suggests that to enhance research engagement, students should start by identifying a topic that genuinely excites them, as passion drives deeper exploration and perseverance. Students should also consider reaching out to faculty members to assist in ongoing projects; contributing to research is a great way to gain experience and even co-authorship.
