🚨🚨🚨 4 Things to Think About Before Every Hike: This is especially important with people who think they are just taking a ‘short hike’ and think it is silly to tell someone where they are going. With hiking, common sense and preparation are essential to have an enjoyable, trouble-free hike. For every hike: 1️⃣ Make a plan – this includes telling someone else and estimating how long the total hike will take, plus extra time; 2️⃣ Hike Smart – a smart phone is no good if it does not work and even if you can get a signal and talk to rescuers, rangers, or friends if you don’t know where you are, what then? Reading about the trail beforehand, knowing what to expect from the trail, and knowing about how long the trail should take are all pieces of information that are important for you to know and for someone back home to know; 3️⃣ Go Prepared – As noted earlier, always carry the 10 Essentials with you on every hike (scroll up for an outline of the 10 Essentials); 4️⃣ Know Your Capabilities – People who don’t turn back when common sense, or others with common sense, tells them they can’t make it up and back safely are foolhardy and sometimes dangerous to themselves and others. Please be safe everyone! #WhiteMountains #whitemountainsnh #safetyfirst #safehiking

Tomorrow is national take a hike day. Get out and explore God’s magnificent creation. The world talks about self-care. I am learning that from my young adult daughters. As we all work a lot it feels great to take a day and do some thing that brings joy to our world. So get out and take a hike! In case you are not an avid hiker, here are some tips. TIPS Where comfortable shoes that are appropriate for the train. Where comfortable clothes that are for walking and climbing. Bring sufficient water for the duration of the hike, along with a non-perishable snack. Bring a paper map and a compass as most trails do not have cell signal. Better to be safe than sorry. Pack lightly to make your hike easier. Know your trail and the trail markings. Make sure you can complete the trail if not that you are able to reverse your hike and go back to the starting point. For safety, make someone aware that you are going on the hike with your expected return time. That’s about it go exploring and have a great time! 🥾🏔️🌳

Ah, bear bells — some won't leave for a hike without them, some would rather never hear the sound again. So, what's the truth...do bear bells do anything for your safety? The short answer: ...Well, it's a little complicated, but mostly, it's a maybe. While making noise is absolutely a smart idea on trails where bears may be present, a bear bell may not be the *most* effective noise-maker. Some argue that the noise is too faint, and won't do enough to alert bears of your presence until you're closer than you'd like to be. Still, there's no real harm in carrying a bear bell, aside from possibly irritating your hiking buddies if they're not fond of the sound. Alternative noise-makers? Clap your hands or speak loudly with your hiking partners (or to yourself, if you're solo!) to make bears aware of your presence. Don't forget to pack the bear spray — and know how to use it! — and always stay bear aware while you're out on the trail. #AmericanHikingSociety #AmericanHiking #TrailChat #HikeLife #HikerLife #TrailChats #OutdoorAdventures #OnTheTrail #OnTheTrails #HikingCommunity #ExploreMoreOutdoors #ExploreTheOutdoors #HikingSafety #WildernessSafety #BearCountry #BearBells #BearSpray #BearSafety #BearSafetyTips #StuffHikersSay #Hiking #OverheardOnTheTrail #AHSOverheardOnTheTrail
