🌍 On the 9th of August, the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we celebrate Indigenous communities' rich cultures, languages, and knowledge systems. These 476 million people across 90 countries have a deep connection to their lands, and their sustainable practices offer valuable insights into preserving our planet. 🏞 Unfortunately, despite their significant contributions, Indigenous peoples often face challenges like land dispossession and cultural erosion. Sustainable tourism can play a crucial role in supporting these communities by respecting their rights, protecting their lands, and celebrating their traditions in a way that benefits them directly. 🎓 Educating ourselves is essential. The UN and other organizations provide resources to help us understand Indigenous rights and promote ethical tourism practices that honor and sustain these communities. 🌱 Let’s commit to responsible travel that uplifts Indigenous peoples, preserves their heritage, and ensures their voices are at the forefront of sustainable tourism. For more details, explore the UN International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples page and the OHCHR’s e-learning tool about indigenous people's rights. https://lnkd.in/dv98ZcPP #IndigenousPeoplesDay #SustainableTourism #Travelife #ResponsibleTourism

#WorldTourismDay While tourism can be a force for good and peace, it's essential to acknowledge the critical issues facing Indigenous peoples and women in the global tourism industry (e.g., Tourism's Dirty Secret: The exploitation of hotel housekeepers by OXFAM Canada) My research with Indigenous and Campesino communities in Ecuador (including my community in Mulalo, Cotopaxi) has shown the powerful ways these communities (especially women) are transforming the tourism landscape in the rural areas of Ecuador. Their cultural values, such as the minga (community work) and chakras growing (food sovereignty), are central to developing their tourism businesses. If you are interested in reading about these cases, my book Community-based Tourism and Interculturality (in Spanish) is available through the FLACSO library, and a recent paper I co-authored with Ayme Tanguila is with the Journal of Sustainable Tourism. Note. The colorful picture was taken by my cousin Nathaly Rocha, who leads youth and community-led research in Mulalo. #sustainabletourism #Indigenousvoices #womenintourism

📑 As we live in an era of #climatechange, the #tourism sector must directly confront the challenges it creates. The future requires adaptive strategies and collective action from all stakeholders. By integrating sustainability into the core of tourism, we protect biodiversity, improve the livelihoods of local communities, and strengthen our shared responsibility to build sustainable and thriving destinations. The comprehensive assessment report, commissioned by #PPSE and the Ministry of Industry, Entrepreneurship and Trade, has analyzed the private sector's readiness to adopt sustainable practices and green transition principles. This initiative positions Kosovo as a proactive actor in the European sustainability landscape. ALB: https://shorturl.at/1mDsF ENG: https://shorturl.at/J1uPW SRB: https://shorturl.at/lJejh

November is Tourism Awareness Month in #Guyana and this year’s theme: ‘A People-Centred Tourism Product: Elevating Our Profile,’ reminds me of an earlier visit to the Rupununi & Essequibo with colleagues of the Compete Caribbean Partnership Facility (CCPF). ✅ In the Rupununi, CCPF is working with local stakeholders and #MSMEs to improve their offering of #Sustainable & #Inclusive tourism experiences that can generate more revenues for the communities. Similarly, the focus in Essequibo is to increase visibility of the county to potential visitors by making the cluster more competitive. ✅ Both projects aim to assist Guyana to develop its tourism sector with strong support of CCPF’s partners – the Inter-American Development Bank, the United Kingdom’s Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office, the Caribbean Development Bank & the Government of Canada. Happy Tourism Month Guyana! 👉 Learn more about the Partnership and its projects in Guyana here: https://lnkd.in/eBCHz9uv

World Tourism Day: Tourism as a Catalyst for Peace Tourism plays a vital role in promoting peace and stability by fostering interconnectedness among nations. Economically, it serves as a key driver for sustainability, supporting scientific education, technological advancements, and international collaboration. By bringing people together, tourism nurtures cultural exchanges, offering mindful and spiritual experiences while sharing unique traditions and diverse flavors. It boosts energy, creates livelihoods, and builds strong global networks. In peacebuilding, tourism helps establish connections that enhance mutual cooperation and tolerance between countries, breaking down barriers of misunderstanding. Furthermore, in post-conflict regions, tourism aids in rebuilding communities by encouraging reconciliation and fostering collaboration, playing a pivotal role in recovery. Countries that embrace sustainable tourism practices often enjoy higher levels of peace, as the industry promotes environmental awareness and respect for local cultures. As we celebrate World Tourism Day on 27th September 2024, let us recognize the power of tourism as a force for global peace and sustainable development. #Women #Empower #InPower #Leadership #WorldTourismDay #SDG16 #SDG8 #SDG11 #SDG12 #TourismForPeace #SustainableTourism #CulturalExchange #Peacebuilding #PostConflictRecovery #SDGs #WomenAscension #Global
