Generators have been indispensable for the people in Houston the past couple of weeks. But I do feel bad for all the people who are stuck both without power, and having to listen to those generators. Here's my latest #Homeownerous column for The Wall Street Journal on ways to be a responsible generator-owning neighbor. #noisenofun #dontbeajerk https://lnkd.in/efP9raKf

If you're planning a trip for Monday's solar eclipse, you're going to want to read my latest for The Wall Street Journal. There is little precedent for the number of cars expected on the road, especially after totality. Just how many visitors each area gets will depend on the weather forecast and cloud cover. But there are some rough estimates. In Indiana, officials say it’s as if the Indy 500, which draws over 300,000 people, were taking place in three locations across the state. In Vermont, the only point of reference is a 2004 Phish concert that brought 60,000 people to a rural area—and the state could get more than double that. Some Texas towns expect to see their population triple. So what's an eclipse-goer to do? ⏳ Arrive early, stay late. If you must leave after totality, transportation officials advise waiting several hours before beginning your return journey. 🌙 Consider spending the night. Travelers have booked campsites, hotels and short-term rentals in their eclipse-viewing locations. ⛽ Plan ahead. Make sure you fill up on gas, and bring water, food and even a paper map. Read on below for more tips and a look at what states are doing to prepare. #travel #eclipse #pathoftotality
Driving Next Week Will Be Brutal for a Huge Chunk of the Country. Blame the Eclipse.

Did you know that in the face of extreme heat events, buildings with integrated microgrid systems, such as or schools or municipal facilities, can become emergency shelters for residents? Microgrids shine in their ability to operate independently from the main power grid during outages, maintaining a steady flow of electricity. This is especially crucial during heatwaves, where a continuous power supply can prevent heat-induced emergencies and ensure that vital community operations remain active. Learn more about microgrids at: https://hubs.ly/Q02DXYQ-0 #microgrids #resiliency #extremeheat

One of the greatest advantages of solar street lighting is its ability to continue operating during power outages. Since solar lights are independent of the electrical grid, they remain fully functional even when the grid experiences a blackout. This is particularly valuable in regions prone to natural disasters, storms, or other events that can disrupt the power supply. During a power outage, solar street lights ensure that roadways remain illuminated, preventing accidents and maintaining public safety. This reliability makes solar street lighting a vital part of emergency preparedness for municipalities that prioritize safety in all conditions. #solarstreetlighting #ledlighting #ledlights #publicsafety

Relatively minor impacts from Tropical Storm Ernesto, but 40% of the island is without power at the moment. I'm fine. Working from home today; if the power goes out I can plug my 2014 Nissan leaf into a power strip and power my fridge & most things in my ouse. And if I use the whole 18kWh of car battery, I have a small backup generator that can power things in the house, and also (slowly) charge the car back up. Interestingly: I'm a renter, and there is solar on my roof, but no batteries attached, so if the power goes out the solar will be useless. https://lnkd.in/ejFwNpxV
