How do you approach this field condition? In this instance, the topside of the core is more or less in tact. I've certainly seen cleaner cores in my life, but the jagged edges are not a game stopper. But there is a fly in the peanut butter. There is no access to the top because of a stone tub basin. So bottom side install it is right? Well the concrete is heavily spalled and unworkable in its current state. So how do we approach this? The penetrant is a 3" PVC sch 40 drain. So we are in the realm of a caulk only seal. But the spalled concrete truly leaves up only with a mineral wool R value backer, comp sheet or break metal plate and wrap strip install style EJ. This is why trades doing THEIR jobs correctly has a vast and highly expensive impact on bidding firestop. The firestop contractor has no control over the mess left behind by a different trade, just the argument over who eats the cost of the now difficult repair. #3m #internationalfirestopcouncil #IFC #firestop #firestopping #firesafety #lifesafety #continuingeducation #constructioneducation #construction #buildinginnovation #buildbetter #buildsmart #passivefireprotection #codeenforcement #buildingcodes #firemarshal #buildinginspections #contractoreducation #constructionmaterials #buildingmaterials #kcmo #inspectors #codesinspectors #firemashals

My two cents: If you diagonally drill into the core sides and install rods and then pack it with concrete

so true. Firestop Contractors (and often insulators) are totally at the mercy of the MEPs. I'd love to see them communicate more, but it seems like insulator and SFC subs are too nervous to tell their clients how to do their job properly. You would figure that--if it's going to save money AND potentially lives at the same time--it would be a no-brainer.

Can you find a engineering UL system that can used wrap strips with fire rated mortar? You can install the wrap inside the thickness of concrete and then fill it with Mortar! The mortar in this case should have a ratio 3:1 so you can patt in the whole. The challenge will be the opening allowable by the UL. It should match the max diameter of the the spalled opening

This is not a fire stopping situation this falls under a concrete repair unless you use 3M fire stopping bricks reach out to Brad Hopkins at 3M (201) 370-4288 I hope this is still his number

Firestop and Insulation should be married to pipe installer. Threaten the sub-contractor with more money.
