Mulching for the winter shares many advantages with summer mulching, such as decreasing water evaporation, protecting against soil erosion, and suppressing weed growth. Applying a generous layer of mulch on top of the soil can help stabilise soil temperature and moisture levels, smoothing the shift into colder months. Furthermore, as the mulch decomposes, it enriches the soil with new organic matter. #solidground #solidgroundlandscaping #gardentips #smartgardening #mulching #herecomeswinter

"No Mow May seems like a simple thing: You leave your lawn mower in the shed for a month, flowers bloom, and happy bees forage. Of course, it’s not quite so straightforward. The benefits from not mowing for a few weeks are limited. There is research that shows multiple species of bees do forage on dandelions and white clover, but let’s be honest, if all you’re doing is letting dandelions and other weeds bloom, that’s not good quality habitat—and any benefits will be canceled if you power up your mower and restart as if nothing has changed once June arrives. We can’t pat ourselves on the back and say, “Yay, we saved the bees.” Learn what you can do to help pollinators like bees while practicing sustainable landscaping from the Xerces Society:https://lnkd.in/eTqQ8r-n #KeepRocklandBeautiful #RocklandCounty #HudsonValley #HudsonValleyNY #Piermont #Clarkstown #Ramapo #Haverstraw #Orangetown #Suffern #NorthRockland #Monsey #Nanuet #Pollinators #Plants #Gardening #Sustainablity

#NativeBeeHotel Fall is an important time to prepare your farm and garden for success in the coming year. The Eagle Pollination Garden is no exception, but can be the last project to finalize. Since it sits in a public park it is widely viewed by walkers from a sidewalk. The first thing many people want to do after eating a Thanksgiving meal is get outside for a walk (and get away from Uncle Will for a bit.) After winterizing the garden, my son and I build ad hoc pollinator incubators by cross stacking the Joe Pye Weed and other flower stems we cut down into piles and place them in the woods behind the garden. The hollow stems provide nesting sites for many native pollinators and along with mulch, keep organic matter in the site. Mulch also helps regulate the soil temperature and moisture content while providing insulation to the root zone of plants. This year, we decided to add a little education feature to the garden and built a small, and much neater, version in the garden and added signage. It’s important to continually find ways to educate people about the importance of biodiversity, pollination, healthy soils and ecosystems. This is a great project for agriculture educators and commumity gardeners! Please Share if you have any in you network! #AllAgConsidered #Education #Pollination #Gardening #Farming
