Dr. Selena Chan, a Treehouse Eyes partner at Pacific Rims Optometry, is on a mission to slow myopia progression in children. Her dedication began with her own family’s experience—her daughter was diagnosed with progressive myopia at age 10.
Using tools like MiSight® 1 day contact lenses, the first FDA-approved contact lenses for myopia control, Dr. Chan has helped many children, including her daughter, stabilize their myopia.
“My goal is to manage kids' myopia using whatever treatment modality best fits into the patient’s life,” Dr. Chan shares.
Dr. Chan’s commitment to evidence-based care and collaboration has positioned her as a leader in myopia management. Kids with poor vision learn around half as much as kids with good or corrected vision, according to new research from IAPB and Seva Foundation. Over their working life, that correlates to earning 78% less than peers with corrected vision.
With children’s myopia on the rise, it’s never been more important to make #MyopiaManagement your focus.

The role of glasses in pediatric vision care is evolving. No longer just a corrective tool, they’re becoming a key player in proactive eye health management.
Emerging Trends in Pediatric Eyewear:
🤓 Myopia Control Lenses: With rising rates of myopia worldwide, lenses that slow its progression are gaining traction. These innovations could reshape how we manage long-term vision health.
🤩 Child-Friendly Design: Advances in lightweight, durable materials and tailored fits are making glasses more appealing and accessible for children.
🧐 Preventative Focus: Glasses now address not only current vision needs but also aim to prevent complications later in life, aligning with broader trends in preventative healthcare.
What’s Next?
The intersection of innovation and pediatric ophthalmology holds the promise of even more personalized and effective interventions. As awareness of myopia control and early intervention grows, the conversation is shifting from correction to prevention and optimization.

A community optometry-led, decision-making pathway for identifying patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and referring them for treatment can alleviate some stress to an overburdened national health eye service system, according to a longitudinal analysis published in Clinical Optometry (Dove Medical Press).
The optometrist-led initiative can allow more patients who require therapies such as anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) to receive these interventions more expediently (within 2 weeks) compared with the national system in place in the UK, the report explains.

#VisionTherapy treatments can help restore function in patients with acquired or #TraumaticBrainInjuries.
Maybe you’ve had patients who keep you up at night, but have you ever had any you’d be willing to literally crawl into a bed with? When an acquired or traumatic brain injury is at play, that might be your best option for examining their #OpticNerves, since patients with these injuries may lack the ambulatory ability needed to allow examination using conventional methods.
That’s just one example of the level of commitment a #PrimaryCareOptometrist specializing in brain injuries and visual rehabilitation must embrace; and Marc Taub, OD, Ms, EdD, is one of the country’s premier experts in the field. While such methods may seem unusual in everyday optometric practice, it’s all in a day’s work for Dr Taub.
“When something like a stroke or a car accident gets in the way, I consider it an honor to be able to try to get [patients] functioning to the highest level that I can,” he said.
Dr Taub, an expert at #VisionTherapy and #VisualRehabilitation and an educator at Southern College of Optometry has been practicing for 22 years, and many patients have experienced significant quality of life improvements thanks to his treatments. In particular, individuals with vision difficulties resulting from acquired and traumatic brain injuries have been able to revive some or all of their visual functioning under his care.
His methods and knowledge in caring for these patients is now available to all optometrists in his book, From Fracture to Function: Clinical Insights into the Visual Aspects of Acquired Brain Injury.

Navigating the challenges of keratoconus treatment can often feel overwhelming for both patients and healthcare providers.
It's crucial to offer solutions that are effective yet comfortable.
Let’s explore a remarkable option in contact lenses—the hybrid lens. This innovative design combines the best of both worlds, merging the comfort of soft contact lenses with the visual acuity provided by rigid gas permeable lenses.
Hybrid contact lenses are truly a game-changer for those dealing with keratoconus. Here's why:
- The central part of the lens is hard, providing superior optics to address corneal irregularities.
- The soft outer skirt ensures comfort during blinking, alleviating one of the main discomforts associated with traditional hard lenses.
- This dual structure helps maintain clear vision while prioritizing patient comfort, making it an ideal non-surgical treatment option.
By understanding how hybrid lenses work, we can better guide our patients toward achieving improved vision without compromising comfort.
When we provide innovative solutions like this, we not only enhance their visual experience but also help them reclaim their quality of life. So, let’s continue to stay informed and advocate for our patients’ needs in every way possible!

Melissa Barnett, OD, FAAO, FSLS, discussed a real-world study on eye care professional and patient satisfaction with the dry eye treatment lifitegrast (Xiidra) at this year's American Academy of Optometry meeting. The study had a retrospective cross-sectional design and surveyed 12 eye care practitioners, including 6 ophthalmologists and 6 optometrists, about their experiences prescribing lifitegrast to an average of 1288 patients with dry eye disease.

It's always important to surround yourself with staff who have a strong pulse on things, like Hannah Higgins. She recently noted that while navigating the intricacies of The Gospel Coalition, we often feel like we’re running an emergency room. As our incredible Operations Team juggles multiple urgent needs, Hannah shared this perfect analogy:
Imagine an ER with three parents arriving within seconds of each other:
-Parent A’s child has a painful sore throat, likely strep. They’re processed and sent to wait for care.
-Parent B’s child has a broken arm, and they’re in pain too, waiting for care.
-Parent C’s child is in heart failure, needing immediate life-saving surgery.
While Parents A and B grow increasingly frustrated, wondering why their children must wait, the entire staff is mobilized to save Child C’s life. Rightfully, Parents A and B could ask, "Why don’t you have more staff? Why haven’t you communicated better? Why isn’t there a board showing us that a life-threatening situation is in progress?"
This analogy resonated with me because it highlights a challenge we face at TGC: balancing the needs of multiple critical projects with a limited operations team. Our 1.5:1 front-of-house to back-of-house ratio presents unique challenges, and we recognize the need to invest more in operations to support our mission effectively. Best practices show a ratio of 1:2 and, in some cases, 1:3!
I’d love to hear how others have navigated these operational dynamics in their organizations. How have you balanced prioritizing urgent needs, communicating effectively, and managing limited resources? Your feedback would be invaluable as we continue to grow and serve.
I empower healthcare brands to elevate their identity, fostering emotional connections that build trust, loyalty, and impactful growth. Let’s collaborate to transform your brand and create lasting success.
Dr. Marc Bloomenstein shared an exciting perspective on the evolution of treatments in eye care. Remember when pilocarpine was a game-changer, but patients struggled with discomfort and the frequent dosing of 2% or 4% solutions up to four times a day? Fast forward to today, and we’re reimagining miotics in functional and patient-friendly ways. 🙌
Dr. Bloomenstein likened this to the transformation of bimatoprost—originally a glaucoma medication—into Latisse when patients noticed its unexpected lash-enhancing benefits. It’s proof that innovation can turn challenges into opportunities for improved care.
