On our Raising Independent Kids FB group -- https://lnkd.in/e_URUrrf -- a mom asked how to make her clingy 7-year-old more independent. My favorite reply: "Give doses of independence without them realizing it. Do they like to cook? Let them build a menu and list and cook the dinner while you fold clothes in another room. Do they enjoy a treat from the gas station after school? If they know how to use a debit card/pay then let them go in alone and get their treat. Send them to find things on your shopping list at the grocery store a few aisles over. If they are old enough/mature enough, go get gas and leave them at home. It’s 10 minutes. Dont have a huge conversation about it just pop your head in let them know you are going to get gas and will be right back. Act confident. A lot of times it’s a confidence issue or they know you will do it, so why bother? Giving those micro exposures with a safety net builds that confidence.
