This is such a depressing article to read. The Conservatives are so out of touch with what the majority of the British public want which is : long term thinking to plan and implement cost effective measures to include required renewable energy initiatives in our society. Yet as in their failure to hold Water companies to account this is yet another confirmation that the Conservatives put shareholders, business and their own political survival above the most important issues of everyone in this country. I hope you are reading this messrs Miliband and Starmer.
Green Industrialist, Labour’s Green Knight according to Sunday Times. Founder of Ecotricity, Skydiamond, BritWind, Devil’s Kitchen & Green Britain Foundation. Chairman of Forest Green Rovers. UN Climate Change Champion
Excellent article from Fiona Harvey this. Housebuilding industries gained £15 billion, while homeowners must stump up £45 billion to achieve the green standards the Tories scrapped – even though it was three times cheaper to build these measures from the start. Added to that the £5 billion in higher energy bills (from our recent report). This becomes a massive scandal because the Tories have received so much money from this industry (£40 million) - making them one of their top ten donors. That's thirteen times more than Labour, who are in favour of higher standards, received from the same sector. It's hard not to see a link between donations and influence over policy. The Tories are sacrificing the interests of ordinary people for money.

How we do things at Houseful is as important as what we do. Ensuring that we’re showing up for people and the planet is not only core to our culture, embedded into our employee behaviours, but also a critical step in ensuring the business is set up for success in the future. We’re proud to share the progress we’ve made over the last year in our 2023 ESG report, with particular highlights including: - Leveraging Hometrack (part of Houseful) data to grow its portfolio of energy performance products including its EPC data solution. Over time, this will help improve the quality and energy efficiency of the UK’s housing stock. - Our employees delivered over 750 hours of career and skill development support to children from low-income families through its partnership with education charity Future Frontiers. - Zoopla (part of Houseful)'s joint research with Crisis supported their efforts to encourage the Government to increase local housing allowance in line with inflation - these changes were announced in the Autumn statement and have positively impacted 1.6 million households. Across Houseful, we also raised over £70,000 for Crisis to help those at risk of or facing homelessness right now. For more on our ESG commitments, achievements and framework - take a look at the full report:

🏡The Somerset Levels and Moors Shed (SLaMS) were awarded £4,920 of funding from the Hinkley Point C (HPC) Community Fund, to build recycling bin storage shelters for housing association tenants living in Bridgwater. ♻In total the Shedders built 41 recycling bin shelters to help the community feel prouder of their homes, encourage recycling, and help reduce littering. 💭Amelia Thompson, Senior Programmes Manager at SCF, said: “Organisations like SLaMs play an important role in our communities, offering connection, conversation, and creation. A different estate of mind?* An interesting piece (particularly on Borde Hill) about something we’re seeing more and more. The new generation of estate owners, often having worked in the City, are contributing so much - renewed energy and renewable energy; finding imaginative ways not just to diversify the estate business, but to attract a more diverse crowd to engage with it. From festivals, art foundations, eco-lodges, partnerships with local schools and charities, or environmental not-for-profits or businesses, modern estates really are evolving - and so too should their lawyers. Brand, art, reputation, H&S, charity law compliance and safeguarding, ESG, data protection, cyber security (I could go on) all matter - it’s not just about first registrations and agricultural tenancies anymore. *credit to my husband for this abysmal pun. #landedestates #reframingthedebate

The simple logic of ‘Sustainable Placemaking’ explained through clear statistics around density, efficient use of land and the conflict that traffic modelling creates for Good Placemaking. Some excellent points to consider if you want to justify building at higher more sustainable densities to create resilient places and communities - than the known norm of semi detached and singular housing typologies! How can one innovate in a place where car remains king? Also refreshing to learn this was targeting a ‘garden village’ concept. The whole construct of sprawl versus compact needs to be queried - even more alarmingly now? When nature and green-blue open spaces need to be given greater breathing space to perform at socio- economic and environmental levels?
Sustrans have partnered with CREATE STREETS on a groundbreaking new report that could help lead to more actual ground-breaking across the country and get us building the homes and sustainable communities the country desperately needs. Today’s Sunday Times had fantastic coverage - the headline says it all: Let’s build for people not cars The premise - take a failed housing development near Chippenham and instead of spending £75m on a major road junction that will increase traffic, emissions and pollution, spend it on what people need: better access to local services, better public transport, better walking, cycling and wheeling links. Hats off to David Milner who was the original driving force. Thank you to all involved at CREATE STREETS and Sustrans, including Rachel Toms for her leadership, Arthur Girling Dan Simpson Flo Johnson-Marshall Bénédicte Dubiez Alison Griffiths Robert Kwolek and of course Nicholas Boys Smith. And a big thank you to our funders: Foundation for Integrated Transport and Rees Jeffreys Road Fund Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/e4r7YFZ7

https://lnkd.in/gx4YDktV transformation starts with each individual.
I have this argument with people who think anything other than massive structural and population level change is a waste of time. It's not, and without individual and neighbourhood action we wither. We always need multilevel, networked action, and to sustain any of it we need loving, giving relationships in our own daily lives and communities.
