Today, researchers released a new report titled “A Nation’s Children at Risk: Insights on Children’s Mental Health from the Understanding America Study” that examined the current state of adolescent mental health in the United States. Key Findings -Students who are on track to be chronically absent or who are earning Cs are three or more times as likely to face mental health challenges as those with fewer absences or As and Bs. -Black and lower-income families report fewer school mental health services, but are more likely to utilize them when available. -Nearly 20 percent of families without access to mental health services would enroll their children if offered. #adolescentmentalhealth #Oasiseducation #ThriveCompass360

This fact sheet summarises the growing mh needs in adolescents, (especially girls, older adolescents and those from less affluent backgrounds) across Europe. Key point = Almost half of young people have unmet mh care needs. We LAMPresearchUK are working on scalable solutions like online self help single session interventions. These are just one part of what needs to be a mutlipronged, multilevel network of individual and family support, alongside initiatives to address the underlying systemic and societal causes I.e. social determinants, nicely summarised by Mina Fazel et al https://lnkd.in/erJjp7m3. Online self help single session interventions can be accessed on demand, without young people needing to wait or to ask an adult for help. They are designed to be completed in a single sitting or 20-30 minutes, and share a key message from an evidence based mh strategy e.g. doing more of what matters can help you to feel better (behaviour activation based). We know that many other types of support, including multisession and therapist provided support are needed, and believe that young people should have options of different kinds of help and that these kinds of help should be linked and not mutually exclusive.

MHPSS integration in our programs should not be an after thought, an add-on or considered a 'luxury' but a critical need which should be prioritized.

Today I attended a conference on Population Health and Tackling Inequality #CPHCONF2024. There was some very interesting people from all different backgrounds sharing the insights on tackling inequalities in communities. The statistics are striking in that inequality is growing despite all the talk and efforts many of us making. Listening to everyone speak where we talked alot about communities I realised how little emphasis there is on families, that form the base units of communities. If we are to create systemic change to tackle inequalities, that has to start with empowering families. Giving families the life skills, the socio-emotional learning and caregiver support is critical as the World Health Organisation - Europe recently outlined https://lnkd.in/eyasKgqA As one colleague I spoke to today at the conference said "A lot of what's needed is not rocket science but about genuine engagement with empathy and understanding" On reflection that's so true and by starting tackling inequalities within families, it naturally leads to more open and engaged communities.

New studies show that teen mental health is worsening in the US, particularly seen thorugh increased rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. The research reveals that young women are affected most, with higher levels of mental health issues compared to male peers. The report underscores the importance of improving mental health resources and support systems in schools. Educating staff on mental health conditions, providing access to school counselors or therapists, and having clear procedures for handling mental health crises are just a few ways that schools can improve. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Much larger policy changes, as well as intense mental health initiatives, are necessary to combat worsening youth mental health effectively. #MentalHealth #TeenMentalHealth
Despite some gains, teens — especially girls — are still struggling with their mental health since the pandemic, report shows | CNN

Did you know? According to the Mental Health Foundation, 20% of adolescents may experience a mental health problem in any given year. 😔 Shocking, right? But it doesn't stop there. By age 14, 50% of mental health problems are already established, and by age 24, it climbs to 75%. 😱 It's clear we need to act early. Yet, only 10% of children and young people aged 5 to 16 years have clinically diagnosable mental health problems, leaving a staggering 70% without the necessary interventions. 😔 This is WHY we do what we do. Let's break the stigma and prioritise mental health support for our youth! 💪💙 #MentalHealthAwareness #EarlyIntervention #BreakTheStigma Anita Goyal MBE 💚Avnish Goyal CBE 💚Kieran Goodwin Jaylan Sesli Jermaine Harris Working Options in Education UpFront Theatre Company Ricardo Erasmus Dr Rosie Mead Stephen Burke Goyal Foundation Amie Daniels Roxy Potts Lucy Hibbert

Crisis Framing Does NOT help youth (or anyones') Mental Health! Andrew Fuligni spoke to EdSurge reporters about how crisis-framing... hinders the ability to find solutions that help adolescents find support... https://lnkd.in/ebadKeYb I love this paper by FRAMEWORKS about changing that narrative. "Three cultural mindsets are currently influencing perceptions about—and limiting action on— youth mental health: Individualism, Fatalism, and Otherism. We need a new narrative that makes it clear that this is a public issue that we can address by designing better supports for young people, and that we all share responsibility in addressing this" https://lnkd.in/ebadKeYb, https://lnkd.in/eXBtRhqg

5moMy personal view is that we should really focus on the 11-14 age group. That means funding middle school programs that can make a dent in this problem. Has anybody run a trial banning cell phones in middle schools?
