GREY POWER: "With the ship alongside, it might be that the crew consisting of 20 Indian nationals and one Sri Lankan will be treated rather more humanely, in a fashion that might be thought appropriate as 'shipwrecked mariners', which surely nobody can dispute that they are. They have surely suffered a considerable trauma with this appalling crash, but have been required to remain aboard to keep the job running, with no access to the shore. "Worse still, a few weeks into their confinement, the FBI investigators thought it reasonable conduct to remove all their mobile devices, leaving them unable to communicate with their loved ones or anyone else. Admittedly, a few days later, they were given temporary mobile devices, which of course would have had none of their personal data available. "It is good to see that the treatment of the 'Dali' crew, after their initial ordeal, has increasingly been the subject of adverse comment, prompting several commentators to ask whether a crew of US citizens would have been so confined. There are the usual mealy-mouthed official lines about visa restrictions, and the managers of the ship have been enabled to supplement the crew to help them out, and supply local ready meals to help out the exhausted cook. "The usual welfare organisations, such as the excellent Baltimore International Seafarers’ Center, have been in action, but unable to board the ship. And it is not being unreasonable to ask whether it was entirely appropriate for the crew to be aboard as the explosive charges blew much of the bridge off the bow in a spectacular essay in demolition engineering. "All in all, the treatment of a foreign shipwrecked crew in awful circumstances, possibly with legal charges facing some of them, does not reflect well on the US authorities. Those with longer memories might have recalled the truly awful treatment accorded to seafaring visitors in the years after 9/11 and the more recent way that the international seafarer was taken completely for granted during the pandemic." The European Union will create a so-called "talent pool", which will make it easier for employers to hire people from non-EU countries. This could mean social dumping for aviation, warns Flyvebranchens Personale Union (FPU) and EU parliamentarian Marianne Vind. “It is not difficult to imagine that Malta decides to put pilots and cabin crew on the shortage lists and that a staffing company based in Malta then starts recruiting #pilots and #cabincrew from third countries and sends them to work in any EU member country," says Anders Mark Jensen, FPU's Vicepresident. "We are deeply concerned about the impact this could have on the aviation industry. We have already seen how employers have exploited Eastern European labor. We are fighting to ensure decent working conditions in an industry that is under pressure, and this proposal goes against everything we are fighting for.” Anders Mark Jensen cites as an example that FPU has started a branch in Romania to improve working conditions in Eastern Europe. "FPU Romania has been our way of fighting against social dumping in the EU, but the new proposal will put enormous pressure on the working conditions of all Europeans, and we will be faced with an almost unmanageable task. There needs to be a requirement that everyone must work on the same terms as colleagues in the country in which they get a job.” Source: https://lnkd.in/d9ihqGYY #aviationindustry #socialdumping #fpuromania #Denmark #Romania #aviation

Weekly Comments/Improving transportation is closely linked and requires courage to execute The Taoyuan City Government's towing and relocation policy aims to combat unpaid roadside parking occupation. Despite being enacted over two months ago, its implementation rate has dropped to zero, prompting a Democratic Representative to advocate for a reassessment of law enforcement efforts. Failure to pay for roadside parking beyond 14 days can result in towing; however, bureaucratic delays and document revisions hindered actual implementation. Proposed in June, the local regulation only took effect in October, raising questions about coordination predictability and considerations during the law's revision. With 41 long-term occupied spaces amid nearly 20,000 paid parking slots, the policy's impact on overall traffic is minimal. Public skepticism about the government's ability to address broader traffic issues has grown due to a lack of visible enforcement, especially in busy areas like the Xingren Night Market and Taoyuan Baseball Stadium, where illegal parking is rampant. Illegal parking significantly threatens road traffic safety. Although legal frameworks exist, there is a critical need for effective enforcement and decisive actions. Responses to accidents and public concerns typically prompt demands for policy review. #MotiveAsia #Taiwan https://lnkd.in/gWrPx2JZ

🌍 Top 10 Tips for Securing a Work Permit in Canada 🇨🇦 Know the Types of Work Permits: Understand the different types of work permits available—Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) and International Mobility Program (IMP). Choose the one that aligns with your situation. Get a Valid Job Offer: Ensure you have a legitimate job offer from a Canadian employer. This is a crucial requirement for most work permits. Check for LMIA Requirements: For the TFWP, your employer may need to obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). This document demonstrates the need for a foreign worker. Gather Required Documents: Compile all necessary documents, such as your job offer letter, proof of qualifications, work experience letters, and any required LMIA documentation. Complete the Application Accurately: Fill out the application form carefully. Inaccuracies or incomplete information can lead to delays or denials. Prepare for Biometrics: Depending on your nationality, you may need to provide biometrics (fingerprints and a photo). Schedule an appointment at a local application support center as needed. Consider Language Requirements: Some work permits may require proof of language proficiency (e.g., IELTS or CELPIP). Prepare for and take any required language tests in advance. Apply Early: Submit your application as early as possible to allow ample time for processing. Some permits can take weeks or even months to be approved. Stay Informed About Changes: Immigration policies can change frequently. Regularly check the official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website for the latest updates and information. Seek Professional Guidance: Consider consulting a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) for personalized assistance throughout the application process. Their expertise can significantly increase your chances of success. Ready to take the next step in your Canadian journey? "How old are you?" "Are you married?" "How many children do you have?" Thought I'd send in a cheeky application to go back to sea as an Electro Technicial Officer after a 2 year break and came across this form I needed to complete as part of my application. Not something that is legally allowed to be asked when applying for a shore based role in the UK, but something this ship management company require you to address at the point of initial application to work on a well known UK - France/Ireland ferry company, for all roles including ETOs/Engineers. This is not the first time I've encountered this, might I add, *cough* cruise ships *cough*. Especially for women, these sorts of questions are fodder for discrimination in the challenging world of working at sea. Perhaps this is legal in Cyprus (where said company is based), but bearing in mind these are applications for seafarer roles working between the UK & Ireland/France. The maritime industry must do better. #womenatsea #discrimination #nautilus
