𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗻𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 This shipping industry collaboration is to address onboard accidents, and specifically fatalities due to entering enclosed spaces. OCIMF (Oil Companies International Marine Forum) kindly hosted the first such gathering in February this year and also the second one on 8 July, and this was attended in person and remotely by a wide variety of industry stakeholders. The group included representatives of P & I clubs, Government marine investigators and shipowners as part of very broad expertise in tackling the long-standing problems associated with enclosed space entry. Application of the Jacking System in a Mobile Offshore Production Unit #MOPU The jacking system elevates the #MOPU platform above water to provide a stable operational base, essential for both production and safety.Stability is crucial to prevent the unit from tilting or collapsing, which could result in catastrophic failures and environmental hazards. #MOPU typically have three to four legs equipped with spud cans or footings to anchor the unit firmly on the seabed.These legs need to be structurally sound and able to handle the stresses of lifting and maintaining the platform’s height. #Types of #JackingSystems : 1- #MechanicalSystems : Utilize rack and pinion gears, known for their reliability and ease of maintenance but require regular inspection to prevent mechanical failures. The rack and pinion mechanism ensures precise control over the leg movements, allowing for controlled elevation and lowering.Any damage to the racks (teeth) or pinions (gears) can compromise the lifting process,so regular inspection and maintenance are essential for safety. 2 - #HydraulicSystems : Provide smoother and more controlled movements, but are more complex and require diligent maintenance to avoid hydraulic leaks and other issues. Electric or hydraulic motors coupled with gearboxes,generate the required torque and speed to lift and lower the platform.Overloading or malfunctioning motors can lead to uncontrolled movements, posing significant risks. The process must be carefully controlled to prevent sudden movements that could destabilize the platform.The jacking system must lift the platform smoothly and evenly to maintain balance. #Safety mechanisms like emergency brakes can halt leg movements instantly in case of malfunction or sudden load shifts.These brakes are designed to engage automatically when needed, preventing accidents. #Redundant systems ensure that the jacking system can continue to function even if one part fails.This includes backup motors, power supplies, and control systems to maintain operation in emergencies. #Routine checks of racks, pinions, motors, and control systems are vital to identify and address wear and tear before it leads to failure.- Proper lubrication, alignment checks, and parts replacement are part of the maintenance protocol. Keeping detailed records of #inspections, #maintenance,and any issues encountered ensures compliance with safety regulations and helps in proactive safety management.
