Gifts ranged from a simple thank you card to a bottle wine, box of chocs or a few tens of £UKP, up to a couple of hundred UKP, monthly, quarterly &/or at an annual awards event. 2. #LONGSERVICE – Recognition was typically for every 5yrs of service with some companies recognising more intervals at the early phase of a career and others removing some of the intervals after 10yrs. Awards ranged from badges, certificates or engraved awards; through to an extra day or two’s holiday every 5yrs (either permanently or for the anniversary year only) ... to monetary awards ranging from several hundreds of UKP up to a couple of thousand UKP. Sometimes we are fortunate enough to have experiences in life that introduce us to amazing people. Yesterday, while facilitating an “HRDOO Strategies for Success” class at #SHRM HQ in Alexandria, VA, I was surprised by my “Teamily” member Carolyn Barley. She said she heard I was teaching a class and popped over to say hi. At lunch, Vince Caldwell stopped by and said the same thing. I am honored and humbled that these two people, who I’ve worked with in various ways over several years at SHRM, took time out of their busy days to seek me out and give me a hug. But wait, there’s more. At an impromptu dinner, I asked Vince how long he’s been at SHRM. His answer? 26 YEARS! I asked him what kept him there for 26 years. His answer, without hesitation, was “the people.” My takeaway was this: 1) Never underestimate the effect you have on people. (PS- behave in a way that makes sure it’s positive!) 2) If you want to create a #culture in your business where people stay through the good times and the bad, encourage opportunities to #connect.
