Precision Fermentation: A Game Changer in the Food Industry and Beyond Precision fermentation has recently gained significant popularity in the food industry, particularly in the production of alternative proteins and novel ingredients. However, this technology is not new. It involves using genetically engineered microbes to produce desired ingredients. A big thank you to Leonard Chong for his excellent summary on the industrial adoption of precision fermentation in the future of food. Beyond food ingredients, precision fermentation has much broader applications. Engineered microbes can produce a variety of chemicals, including fuels, materials, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and cosmeceuticals. This process, known as biomanufacturing, utilizes these microbes as cell factories, which are genetically engineered using tools such as metabolic engineering, systems engineering, and synthetic biology. With the increasing impacts of climate change and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, synthetic biology has been applied to microalgae to transform CO2 into desired chemicals and fuels. My SMAGIC takeaway If you’re in Shipping, chances are you’ve already seen a post or two on the SMAGIC conference held in Copenhagen last week… As I am apparently entering my reflective years, I tend to need a few days to let things sink in. Apart from the obvious in that it was a great event and I really enjoyed reconnecting with people I hadn’t seen in a while and making new connections, then there were two key takeaways for me. 1.    Collaboration is essential for progress The maritime industry is still highly fragmented and highly inefficient in a lot of ways. Fixing inefficiencies requires better collaboration across the entire value chain yet right now, no proper incentives exist for stakeholders to collaborate. The sheer amount of parties -both large and small - involved in this industry does not help.  The challenges ahead are simply too big for one entity to solve this alone. We are seeing the first examples of collaboration giving results, yet not nearly enough for what we need to happen in terms of energy transition and hitting climate goals. As Mette Asmussen stated: “It’s not just about the first movers, it's also about the fast followers to get to the tipping point.” 2.    Business models need innovation If what is missing to increase collaboration and there are not enough incentives to do so, then the answer has to be business models. How can we rethink those to ensure that collaboration is a win-win for all parties involved? How do we change old ways and open up for a new approach on how to make collaboration and exchanging information financially interesting for all parties involved? On the last day of the conference, Studio 30 50 / Shanker Pillai hosted a sprint where we brainstormed on the topic of decarbonization. No surprise that my idea ended up around a new business model incentivising data sharing.  I'm sure it's one of many to come...
