The elephant in the room is very much decarbonisation. In an environment where cost to serve is under more and more pressure, as suppliers look to offset inflationary costs and minimise what they have to pass on to customers, decarbonising logistics is still seen by as a 'nice to focus on' rather than a 'need to focus on'. Many are still living in hope of the magic solution that will make this elephant vanish or are just hoping that it will go away. But this elephant needs tackling and will require many bites before it is gone. The quicker we start to address and start to invest in decarbonisation the easier each bite will be for customers and ultimately consumers to swallow. Attending the decarbonising logistics event on 6th Nov would be an excellent first bite to make. Link is in article below.

A Step Towards Emission-Free Long-Distance Heavy Goods Transport Europe aims to become the first CO2-neutral continent by 2050, as part of the “Green Deal.” A key focus is the transformation of the transport sector, which significantly contributes to emissions. Leading this effort is the electrification of vehicles, exemplified by the EU-funded “ZEFES” project (Zero Emissions Flexible Vehicle Platforms with Modular Powertrains Serving the Long-Haul Freight Eco System). Gruber Logistics, a partner in the ZEFES project, has initiated real-world data collection to understand the current dynamics of long-distance heavy goods transport. This involves analyzing vehicle stops, braking patterns, and speeds on various route segments. The data will assess the feasibility and performance of future fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). The ZEFES project is a collaboration of 40 partners from 14 nations, supported by a budget of nearly €40 million (approximately £34 million). The project conducts extensive tests with both battery electric trucks and FCEVs. Since February 2024, Gruber Logistics has focused on a route from Verona to southern Germany via the Brenner Pass, using diesel... https://lnkd.in/d88rpRxu

Renault Trucks and DACHSER are cooperating on the gradual decarbonization of road freight transport. In total, the fleet in Germany has been expanded by fifteen Renault Trucks vehicles. The all-electric trucks complete local and long-distance transports at seven DACHSER locations in Germany every weekday. "We are convinced that in the long term, only those companies that position themselves sustainably will have a future," says Alexander Tonn, COO Road Logistics at DACHSER. "We therefore want to make a valuable contribution to environmental and climate protection and be a driving force for the logistics industry with measures on many levels. Bringing emission-free vehicles into practical use plays an important role in this. With Renault Trucks, we have a reliable partner with whom we can embark on what is still a long journey to decarbonize our road transports." As a part of our sustainability and climate protection strategy, we are working on the gradual transformation towards zero-emission vehicles and the corresponding charging infrastructure. Since January 1, 2022, we have been sourcing our electricity entirely from renewable energies worldwide. DACHSER is working on steadily increasing the number of BEVs (battery electric vehicles) and FCEVs (hydrogen-powered) trucks in both the local and long-distance transport networks, depending on performance, charging infrastructure and cost-effectiveness. In total, DACHSER already has 70 electric trucks on European roads. #DACHSER #electrictruck #emobility

First tests of electric long-haul transports underway within E-Charge! After preparations, technological development, and research, DB Schenker and Scania Group are now starting the demonstration of a fully electric heavy truck in regular traffic between Jönköping and Södertälje. This is the first logistics flow within the E-Charge project, where electrified long-distance truck transports will be showcased. "For DB Schenker, the purpose is to test and gain experience with fully electric heavy vehicles in long-distance traffic. Electrification of heavy vehicles plays a crucial role in our transition to carbon-neutral transportation, and since heavy traffic accounts for the largest emissions for us, it is incredibly important," says Anna Hagberg, Head of Network & Linehaul at DB Schenker and continues: "It will be incredibly exciting and interesting to learn from this pilot project. In addition to making a significant CO2 saving, it will be exciting to see how the driver's everyday life changes," concludes Anna Hagberg. Also for Scania, reducing emissions from long-distance transports is crucial, and they are delighted with the development. "The vehicle is Scania's first long-haul battery-electric vehicle with this capacity. I am very pleased that we are now able to start testing with our first customers," says David Gotthardsson, Concept Leader at Scania Pilot Partner. "The E-Charge project gives us a unique opportunity to collaborate with other stakeholders, to test and learn together. Together with DB Schenker, we are now testing solutions in real operations," says Tony Sandberg, Vice President Scania Pilot Partner. 💡🚛 🔋 Read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/d9YJQXEp E-Charge brings together participants from vehicle manufacturers, fuel companies, research, and electric grid companies to collaboratively drive the electrification of heavy, long-haul truck transportation. In a system demonstration, various logistics flows will be electrified, with several of them utilizing megawatt charging (MCS). This technology will enable driving for 4.5 hours, charging for 45 minutes, and then driving for another 4.5 hours. Read more about E-Charge here: https://lnkd.in/dJxVUYi4 The project is funded by Strategic Vehicle Research and Innovation, FFI. #Electrification #Logistics #Transport #BEV #SustainableTransports Scania Sverige, DB Schenker Consulting, Schenker Åkeri
