ai-Fu Lee, chairman of Sinovation Ventures, made a bold prediction in 2017 that AI would surpass previous technological revolutions combined. He forecast that AI could potentially replace 50% of human jobs within a decade. In 2024, Lee affirmed the accuracy of his prediction, noting the rapid advancement of AI and its significant implications for job markets. He highlighted that white collar professions are particularly affected by AI's impact. Lee emphasized the need to embrace AI as a tool for productivity and innovation. He urged a shift in mindset towards leveraging AI alongside traditional skills in education and career planning. By adopting this approach, individuals can harness the power of AI to enhance their abilities and stay relevant in an increasingly automated workforce. Lee's prediction serves as a wake-up call to prepare for the future of work and harness the potential of AI. . . . #KaiFuLee #AI #Prediction #tribunetrends

"We live in an age of hyper specialization. This is a trend that’s been evolving for centuries. In his seminal work, The Wealth of Nations (written within months of the signing of the Declaration of Independence), Adam Smith observed that economic growth was primarily driven by specialization and division of labor. And specialization has been a hallmark of computing technology since its inception. Until now. Artificial intelligence (AI) has begun to alter, even reverse, this evolution. "The ascendancy of AI has rekindled debate about the long-term capability of computers to either augment what we do or eventually replace us entirely. Highly specialized computing functions—designed to solve decision-making, learning-based problems like playing chess or filtering spam—are referred to as narrow AI. But AI that can adapt and respond to a broad range of external stimuli, illustrating a shift away from specialization, is referred to as artificial general intelligence (AGI) or strong AI. "The ultimate aspiration of much high-profile AI innovation is to move away from hyper specialization and become generalized. A computer may be able to beat the greatest chess player in the world, but can it function out in the world even at the level of your dog or cat? "Doubtful at the moment. But the direction is clear. While society is moving toward ever more specialization, AI is moving in the opposite direction and attempting to replicate our greatest evolutionary advantage—adaptability." #ai

Job displacement caused by AI is perhaps the biggest concern for many industries and a big impediment to its wider adoption. And while there are many speculations around that, the question about AI's impact on employment has a very straightforward, scinetifically-backed answer based on econometric modelling. Econometric studies have often discussed the impact of technological advancement on employment at a single point in time. However, as the inverted u-shaped curve below demonstrates, the impact depends on where the technology sits on its development trajectory (this figure is a rough estimate of the predicted impact of AI). Early on, it will increase employment as new, or better services and products are developed. Later on, as demand is no longer elastic, it will lead to a reduction in employment. Applied to AI, there is likely still an upward trajectory as AI is currently creating more jobs than it is making people redundant. However, going forward, this picture may change. The developments towards general-purpose AI are likely to accelerate this trend. Finally, the paradox is that, as AI becomes increasingly powerful, there will be a parallel increase in what is considered uniquely human. #ai #llms #technology #aistrategy #aijobs #genAI

Is AI the Future’s Job Creator or Job Destroyer? In the midst of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, a pressing question arises: Is artificial intelligence (AI) taking over our jobs or elevating our potential? This question, raised by participants at the recent panel discussion “Skills in the Age of AI,” encapsulates a global concern that transcends industries, geographies, and socioeconomic structures. Abdullah Abdu Shake, the CEO of Astrotech, set the stage with an observation that struck a chord: “AI is not taking over jobs; it’s taking over repetitive, labor-oriented tasks, allowing humans to focus on creativity and strategic roles.” He likened the AI shift to previous technological waves, such as the invention of the calculator. Rather than rendering mathematicians obsolete, it transformed their roles. AI, similarly, divides the workforce into two: those who adapt and embrace AI, and those who may be left behind if they resist its inevitable integration. The future of employment, especially as AI continues to reshape industries, is fraught with uncertainty but also immense potential. The discussion highlighted how AI’s first wave will automate repetitive, mundane tasks, such as call center work or basic administrative functions. But as Stuart Russell, Professor of Computer Science at the University of California, pointed out, “The real question is, will AI surpass human capability in every dimension by the end of this decade?” For many experts, this is the looming possibility. There has been a continuous talk about the possibilities of AI snatching away the jobs of many professionals and how it will become the biggest reason behind the issue of unemployment. However, there are other concerns as well. Prominent figures like Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking have expressed concerns about its potential risks as AI advances. They warn that if AI reaches an advanced level, there is a danger it could surpass human control. Research in AI has surged significantly, outpacing many other sectors. Both companies and countries are heavily investing in developing AI technologies, skills, and education. Despite this enthusiasm, the primary apprehension about adopting AI is its potential to complicate the sustainable creation of value while reducing human oversight. As our reliance on AI grows, there are concerns that it could limit human cognitive capacities. This could lead to a decline in human intelligence and a more artificial way of thinking. Excessive interaction with technology has also led to a tendency to think algorithmically, without deep understanding. Certainly, AI has improved living standards and simplified daily life. But notably its impact on humanity has been profound, potentially leading to impatience and lethargy. There are worries that prolonged use of AI could diminish human creativity and mental effort in tasks such as planning and problem-solving, thereby affecting professional skills and increasing stress when physical or cognitive effort is required. What do you think about this, let me know in the comment section below. #ArtificialIntelligence #AI #FutureofWork #MachineLearning #Technology #AIJobLoss #AIethics #ExistentialRisk #FutureofHumanity #TechRegulation
