As we reflect on the recent tragedy resulting from the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, our hearts go out to all those affected. In these challenging times, the maritime community's resilience and solidarity are more crucial than ever. In light of this event, we've shared insights on the vital role of Protection and Indemnity (P&I) Clubs in maritime crisis management and how they provide a safety net for shipowners and operators. Understanding these mechanisms can offer some clarity and perspective on the path to recovery and the support systems in place for such unforeseen events. For a more in-depth look at how P&I Clubs operate and their importance in incidents like the bridge collapse, we invite you to read our latest blog post. https://lnkd.in/dE5x4WjB

Tugboats can save the day in emergencies.
I like to brag on our folks when they do special things. On the evening of March 26th, the efforts of the crews on our Capt Joseph Bisso, Becky S and Alma S averted a major disaster when they grabbed and flipped around the MV Thunderbird (750' long with 46' draft), which had lost power downbound, barely avoiding slamming into the MV Anglo Marie Louise, which was tied up and loading at Convent Marine Terminal. Great job by our mariners!

Middle Level Commissioners decision to only increase their annual vessel registration charges by 3.2% for 2025 is a welcome relief to the marine industry. Paula Syred of Fox Narrowboats and British Marine Inland Association said “This limited inflationary increase is a relief and, in contrast to the Environment Agency’s approach, should help see more boats coming to MLC waterways for their home moorings.” Read more here 👉 https://lnkd.in/emdAGY6N

There is a real need for more transparency in the information flow of ports. Too many decisions are based on incomplete data. I think this question is appropriate and global data must be gathered to address it; would this be an aggregation of Pilotage notes? Not every port has harbormasters.

In teaching my course on First in Company Officer and Scene Size Up, whether at the academy, or with seasoned veterans, I always start by asking the question "When Does Size Up Start"? Many believe it starts from when you arrive at the scene, other state it starts with the radio dispatch...but the correct answer is "it starts with knowing YOUR district". Pre incident analysis is vital to making accurate tactical decisions on the fire ground. Every agency should have a policy on company area familiarization and first-due district size up. This information aids in RPDM (Recognition Prime Decision Making), at a time of urgency giving us an additional tool to assist in making better choices. Under stress we won't just rise to the occasion...we will default to the level of our training and preparedness.

We just watched the movie Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks, offers an intense dramatic portrayal of real-life events, but it also provides valuable insights into the complexities of global supply chains. The film follows the hijacking of the Maersk Alabama, a U.S. container ship, by Somali pirates in 2009. One of the key takeaways from the movie is the importance of risk management in supply chain operation as the shipping route taken by the Maersk Alabama passed through waters notorious for pirate activity. It also highlights the interconnectedness of supply chains and how a disruption in one part of the chain can have far-reaching consequences. The hijacking not only put the crew’s lives in danger but also threatened the delivery of goods, illustrating how a single event can ripple through the supply chain, affecting everything from shipping schedules to inventory levels. https://lnkd.in/eMzPJYCm

Opposites. For example: self-belief and self-doubt. Being a small-business owner is a mixture of these two at any given moment. USUALLY I am fairly full of the former. This dream of mine has been churning for quite a few moons and I KNOW it is a viable, reasonable, much-needed service. Yet every so often, that negativity creeps in and I wonder what the hell I'm doing. This is where my support crew comes in. This is where logic kicks in. This is where good planning comes in. Then~ it's time to allow Life to marry the ingredients together. Opposites do their job to teach us lessons. it's tough sometimes, but man, oh man...have I learned some incredible things. Have a great Saturday and enjoy the opposites.
