The North Sea's geology makes it an ideal site for carbon capture, repurposing disused oil and gas aquifers for storing emissions from heavy industries. The Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce has been instrumental in supporting Equinor's plans, which have now received government approval for projects in Teesside and the Humber. This initiative marks a significant step toward the UK's 2050 net zero targets, with Energy Secretary Ed Miliband emphasizing its potential to bolster energy security, support industries, and create thousands of jobs. The East Coast Cluster, including the NEP and NZT Power projects, aims to begin construction in 2025 and operationalize by 2028, eventually storing up to 23 million tonnes of CO2 annually. Equinor, alongside partners bp and TotalEnergies, plays a crucial role in these projects, advancing the UK's decarbonization efforts while generating job opportunities in the north-east. Major contract award in the UK for a world first carbon capture project 🏆 Along with our consortium partner GE Vernova and our construction partner Balfour Beatty plc, with the support of our technology partner Shell Catalysts & Technologies, we were awarded a major contract for the Net Zero Teesside Power project in the UK.
