In its ongoing mission to welcome our newest neighbors, Trinity is helping Hot Bread Kitchen prepare asylum seekers for a career in the city’s pro kitchens. Students in the Culinary Career Pathways for New New Yorkers program receive language and kitchen skills training and are matched to job openings at Hot Bread Kitchen’s 200+ employer partners. Twenty-two alumni have already landed jobs. “The week after finishing the program, I was working,” says program graduate Brianna. Doors are open to me now. Following last month’s announcement of an unprecedented joint venture to create job and economic opportunities for Camden residents as part of Cooper’s $3 billion expansion, George E. Norcross III, the chairman of the Board of Trustees of Cooper University Health Care, announced that Cooper has begun an outreach program to Camden residents to sign up for job training opportunities. "When Camden’s renaissance began just over a decade ago, it was clear there were three things that needed to be done for the city’s future: dramatically improve public safety, expand access to high-quality education options and create economic opportunity for city’s residents,” said Norcross. “Programs like this unprecedented partnership with the Carpenters, as well as Camden Works, which disseminates a weekly listing of all job openings for every public and private city employer, are an important part of ensuring that Camden once again becomes a place where people not only want to live, but where they can start a well-paying career.” Click here to read more: https://ow.ly/tIZk50TMxhm

As is the case in many places across the country, my hometown of Chicago has long struggled to address racial and economic inequities. In considering where we are today I am encouraged by our highly engaged and civic minded business community, along with organizations such as #CorporateCoalitionofChicago and #JustActPartners that are working with businesses to advance equity. Recognizing Chicago’s communities are rich with assets that can uniquely meet business and talent challenges, they launched Invest Together (https://lnkd.in/gkg9MgAk). This new effort seeks to identify employers who might be willing to move jobs to the South and West sides of the city and matches those employers with development projects seeking corporate tenants. This week I joined a neighborhood tour of four South and West side community development initiatives. All are in different stages, and all have tremendous promise. These initiatives will contribute significantly to creating more equitable and vibrant communities, bringing jobs and wrap around services. And their approach of engaging communities in the planning process will help ensure sustainability. Here are some details about the initiatives: Greater Grand Crossing: https://lnkd.in/gzRZdjRu Woodlawn: https://lnkd.in/gfzatrMc West Garfield Park: https://lnkd.in/gdMCYmNN & https://lnkd.in/gpCHsHYc North Lawndale: https://lnkd.in/gTBiF39G This is just a sampling of the great work being done by so many across the city. Very grateful for the individuals and organizations committed to making a real difference towards equity. #Advancingequity #BusinessUNusual #PlaceBasedInvestments

Courtney Haynes, chief engagement officer for the nonprofit advocacy group Opportunity@Work, says that 77% of employers are having difficulties finding skilled talent, according to data from Manpower Group. Despite this need, nearly half of the active labor force lacks a bachelor’s degree or higher and may be excluded from access to more than 70% of jobs.

This work for a greater good is truly powerful and motivating.
Founder A Better Life Foundation 🇨🇦🇺🇸/ Upward Mobility Kitchens/ Persephone Brewing/Save On Meats V.2.0/ and half a dozen more. Chef- Social Impact Enrepreneur - Speaker - Host - Community Builder
I love my jobs, a lot. Coming home to Nova Scotia and feeding folks in the communities, schools, and blocks I grew up in has been incredible. And I mean incredible in all the ways that the duality of entrepreneurial and advocate me collide. Challenging from all levels, at times deeply frustrating, and ultimately, incredibly rewarding. Tethering back every single day to the “who and why” of our work is the solution each and every time. Spending time with the coach who sees attendance and participation up from the nourishment his kids receive, the community leaders and nurses who watch the change in their people, the joy in provision and sharing food, reframes the day to day in a way that makes us proud of every day of honing skill and building adaptability, prior to these moments. Repeating loudly, daily, There is no US AND THEM, only US, amidst the divisiveness created by scarcity and fear in our sectors. At the center of it all, the solutions that work for our communities, work for OUR community equally, and a few short weeks ago I pulled together long term partners, government, impact organizations, and family alike to eat our food and spend time together. Food for Good had its first (of many) Halifax evening at Cheeky Neighbour(huge love to Drew and the crew for hosting us) alongside my brother Chef Andy Hay, my team, and a dozen other humans who showed up and out, to help us feed hundreds of families in need this summer. The clip says all the things and I’m super grateful to Dave Culligan and his team threesixfive Media Inc. for capturing and caring so much. Being coast to coast every day taking care of community members in need is a literal dream, an honour, and a privilege we take incredibly seriously. It’s also filled with love and laughs daily, the only way we want to spend our life force, amidst the massive challenges ahead. 🤍

Sending the Department of the Premier and Cabinet (Queensland)’s 50 Policy Futures Graduates out into the public service this week to start their rotations through departments. My advice to them last week: 🍍Public service is a verb. 🍍Political views are ok, even strongly held ones, as long as you leave them at the door and act impartially in your role. 🍍Give frank, fearless and sound advice. 🍍We serve the government of the day, but our first loyalty is to the people of Queensland. 🍍Process is part of public service- we deal with public money after all. But those who stand out use process to find a way to done and get results. 🍍There’s meaning and purpose in a public service career. But sometimes it takes a few role changes to find it. Don’t settle until you do. Life’s too short. #2024policyfutures #graduates
