Showing Up For Me
Typically, I’m behind the scenes of conferences like UNITED: The National Conference on School Leadership. But, true to my position of associate executive director of Professional Learning at National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), I highly value opportunities to learn from other conferences, especially their speakers. I see it as showing up for myself.
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend an ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership conference where I heard from many inspirational speakers. Four in particular—Amanda G., Adam Kinzinger, Andre Norman, and Marli Williams—stood out to me. Their messages proved powerful in my own professional learning during that conference, leaving an impact on me that still hasn’t faded. I wanted to share some of my takeaways with school leaders. Here’s a little snippet from each speaker that I hope you’ll hold close to you as you settle in to a new school year.
Gorman encouraged attendees to look for common ground as you respect differences, saying, “Find the people who are different and see if there’s something that connects you.”
Kinzinger said that one of the greatest leadership characteristics you can have is to always tell the truth. “If you can’t stand in front of them as leaders and tell them the truth, then how do they get to the right spot,” he told attendees.
Norman’s personal experiences have helped him empower people to have authentic, unvarnished conversations that drive change effectively and advance social justice. He left his audience with two parting thoughts: "Don’t jump over our own to save someone else," and "Don’t judge me; just call me."
Williams tells us to make play a priority. Ask yourself, “What am I doing for fun this weekend?” That is an example of you showing up for you.
