Is a 'split session' a good idea for voice acting? It's a familiar scenario... A client has organised a directed session so they can offer live feedback while I record. Normally, directed sessions are booked in 1 hour blocks. But a LOT of scripts don't take 1 hour to record. They take a few minutes to read - 3-4 takes plus chat is 30 minutes tops. And this is when 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗕𝗟𝗘𝗘𝗗* can happen... (*𝘺𝘦𝘴, 𝘐'𝘷𝘦 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮 - 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘺𝘰𝘶) The client thinks they've got what they want. But they still have session time to 'use up'. So we end up recording more takes... Really, just for the sake of it 🤷♂️ The thing is - this can be the 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗦𝗧 thing to do. Too many takes = ❌ Too many options to navigate which are all essentially the same. 𝙊𝙍 ❌ Lots of takes done wildly different for the sake of it which were never going to be be viable. And all because the client wanted to use the studio time they'd paid for. So my solution? On c͟e͟r͟t͟a͟i͟n͟ projects, I suggest a 'split session'. If a client is confident that they have what they need, any time left over in the session can be used in the future for pick ups/revisions. So if we've taken 40 minutes - that means there's 20 minutes 'in the pocket' should a line need tweaking once the VO is in place. Now like I said - this is project dependent. And I also establish a time frame for such an offer. But it's a different way of utilising the benefit of my home studio. I don't have to 'rehire' a space for a pick up session. I don't have to travel to an external studio. I just have to press record again. Since beginning to offer this, it's proven very useful - particularly for clients not that used to working with voice actors. They're not so concerned about having missed something. Which means the session itself is often more focused. I’m an independent Australian voice actor. But it wasn’t always this way. For the first 17 years of my voiceover career I had agent representation. In 2016 I set up my home studio which is when I learned about all the voiceover work that takes place away from the talent/agent model. I started exploring these other work portals because I wasn’t getting enough work through my agent. (I should probably add that I live in Brisbane and always have - not Sydney or Melbourne which are much bigger cities.) Fast forward to 2021 - I decided to abandon my agent representation in favour of working independently using my own marketing efforts and a mix of the online platforms that I had been using since 2016. Since 2021, aside from a couple of insignificant jobs that have come in via international agents, 100% of my work has come from my own marketing efforts and online platforms. Much to the displeasure of many at the top of the chain, online voice casting platforms have certainly disrupted the market, just like Uber did to the taxi industry - but just like Uber these alternative voice casting portals are not going away. More voice seekers are migrating across from the traditional agent model and finding no difference in the professionalism or the standard of the work they are getting from the talent on these sites either in performance or audio quality. I provide the same service - voiceover performance, professionalism, speed and ease of communication, turnaround times, audio quality - as I did when I was booked through the agent I had, so I give buyers who are new to these platforms a positive experience and no reason not to return. There will always be those that want the bells and whistles that come with the higher price tags attached to booking a voice actor through an agent. But if you look a little lower down the ladder you will find a much larger population of voice seekers….and an equally large group of voice actors who have embraced the changing industry landscape, ready and waiting to do the work on offer. I earn more money now on my own than I ever brought in through an agent. Let me also add that I’ve never felt more in control of my business, and in fact never felt more like an actual business owner, never felt more empowered, more sure of myself and the choices I make, and never felt better in terms of my mental health than I do now. I am an independent Australian voice actor and I am just as professional and legitimate as my represented counterparts. #australianvoiceover #australianvoiceactress #australianvoicetalent #australianvoiceartist ------------------------------------------------------- 🎙 Looking for an Australian voiceover artist minus the bells and whistles? 🚨If you cast voice actors using talent sites/P2P platforms, this is for you. I’m going to try and keep this concise and professional but the reality is I am so angry. Mandy/Backstage/StarNow recently made this update to their T&Cs, effectively granting themselves free reign to shamelessly exploit their paying talent. Have a read below.⬇️ I’ve already written to them to withdraw any consent and to cancel my membership. I’ve also deleted all media from the platform. VAs/VOs I suggest you to do the same. If you cast voice talent, I implore you to do your due diligence with what platforms you use to cast talent, there’s a plethora to choose from and, sadly, there are many who are not set up with the interests of the talent who often have to pay extortionate membership fees/commission. Some of these sites have been low balling our rates, not looking after us when clients have not paid, and now they’ve turned to just straight up stealing our work. Do you really want to support these crooks? If they’re comfortable doing this to their paying talent, do you think you’re safe? If you’ve submitted audition scripts and video references etc, this could effect you too. There are platforms set up that do look after talent (shout out to Voquent - #1 Rated Voiceovers & Translations). But generally speaking, I’d highly recommend having your own roster of talent you can work with directly. We’ve all got to look out for one another and protect our work 💪 —— Looking for a professional British Male Voiceover? Get in touch with me directly at www.MatthewBiddulph.co.uk

Why do so many voice actors react poorly to being asked to coffee by voiceover hopefuls to “pick their brain?” Because no matter how well-intentioned these newcomers, here’s the reality: ❌Most people who get into VO won’t pursue it for very long. When I was starting out 8 years ago, I asked some people to coffee for guidance. One, Ian Fishman, humored me. (Thank you, Ian! ❤️) Another, whom I shall not name, blew me off fairly coldly. About two years into my voiceover journey, people started coming to ME to ask to pick my brain!! Me! 😂 It’s funny because I still had so much to learn. All I could do was help show them to the first steps. I have no idea if any of those people are still in voiceover. I haven’t seen them around…🤷🏻♀️ When you take time out of your busy schedule to give the same lecture about how to get started to people who rarely ever talk to you again afterwards, it’s easy to feel used. I LOVE people. I love sharing with and helping people. So, I’m still happy to talk to people, but I prefer to talk to people who aren’t starting at absolute zero. Instead of asking one person to coffee, here’s my suggestion: FIND COMMUNITY There are lots of places to find community: -A local VO meetup group -By taking a class (in person is best…in Atlanta, I recommend Atlanta Voiceover Studio ) -A conference like VO Atlanta Voiceover Conference or OneVoice -Facebook/Discord groups where voice actors exchange info -Or in an accountability group “Just Google it” isn’t the answer because people are social creatures and crave connection. And people also want social proof before they spend money. I get it. But there are no guarantees in life. So if you want to try it, find a community, do some research, and take a few calculated risks. (I’ll link to my post on how to get started in voiceover in the comments) #community #voiceover #socialproof #beginnersguide

In the highly competitive world of voice acting, the ability to quickly capture and maintain the attention of casting directors is paramount. Just as public speakers, radio broadcasters, and marketers rely on the "7-second rule" or "3-second rule" to engage their audiences, voice actors must master the art of creating a strong first impression during auditions. Humans now have an attention span shorter than a goldfish. According to a study by Microsoft (2015), the avg attention span has dropped from 12 to just 8 seconds since 2000. Given this study is now 9 years old, I suggest that the avg attention span is even shorter. Needless to say, “The importance of those first seconds is undeniable, as they determine whether the target audience remains interested…” (ONELINE, 2023). Marci Liroff, a renowned casting director, emphasizes the importance of grabbing attention immediately in auditions. In an article for Backstage, Liroff states, "If you ever watched audition tapes with a filmmaker, network, or studio executive you'd be horrified. All that hard work you've put into your audition goes unnoticed, because they look at your audition for a few seconds and decide whether they want to continue viewing it. If you don't grab their attention immediately at the top of the audition, they've clicked away. Simple as that. They've moved on." This concept is further supported by research in the field of neuromarketing. A study published in the Journal of Marketing Research found that advertisements that elicited a strong emotional response within the first few seconds were more likely to be remembered. Further on, as neuromarketing expert Roger Dooley explains in his book "Brainfluence," "The first few seconds are critical for engagement. If you can create an emotional connection quickly, you're more likely to keep [the listener] tuned in." The power of capturing attention in the first few seconds of a voice acting audition cannot be overstated. By recognizing the importance of engaging the listener quickly and developing strategies to create a lasting impression, voice actors can set themselves apart in a highly competitive industry. As Marci Liroff reminds us, "If you don't grab their attention immediately at the top of the audition, they've clicked away." References: 1. ONELINE(2023):https://lnkd.in/gTrnQ8pa 2. Liroff, M.
