It’s an activity that can transform who you are at the core of your being, benefiting the communities in which we live, work and play. On this beautiful National Philanthropy Day, I call on Philanthropy to live up to the values that the sector claims to hold. I challenge Philanthropy to actualize their theory of change. Philanthropy needs to do more than think pieces, extraction, and research that it won't put real action and change behind. I want Philanthropy to have practices that align with the values than we hold as movement leaders on the Frontline. Philanthropy needs to actively confront its history and acknowledge the ways in which the funding that it sits on was ill gained. I want Philanthropy to meet moments but also strap in for the LONG HAUL. We need Philanthropy to realize that the rainy days have already been here. I want to take time to acknowledge folks doing it right as well. Live boldly in your values. Make sure that your people can find and access you.

When I think about #volunteering, I’m often reminded of a simple story: a single #drop of water. Alone, it might seem small, but when many drops come together, they form an #ocean. That’s the power of service. As individuals, our contributions matter, but when we come together - especially on a larger scale, like through organizations or corporations - we have the power to create #wavesofchange. Each small act, like planting a tree, mentoring someone, or helping a community, can create ripples of change. Now imagine the impact of businesses, with their resources and people, joining hands to amplify this effort. For us in the corporate world, volunteering is more than a responsibility. It’s a chance to give back, support the communities we work in, and prove that businesses can do more than just profit - they can create real change. Philanthropy is joyous, life-affirming and noble work, but sometimes it is just plain hard. People and relationships can be tricky, so if philanthropy is based on relationships, why would it be easy all the time? However, the trenches of philanthropy can provide great opportunities for strategizing. They can provide time to regroup and often provide protection from the many barriers we relentlessly face. Protective trenches often demand close quarters with folks who share a common cause or vision while providing a great chance to bond. Those tiny spaces can also provide some hard-won truths.
