Stop relying on job ads alone. They’re often scattered and reactive—not the way to build a powerhouse team. I learned this myself early on: posting ads without a strategy didn’t bring in the right people. Top talent isn’t just waiting around for a job ad. They’re thriving and need a reason to leave their current role. Successful hiring means being proactive, delivering a clear message, and building trust consistently. Ask yourself next time: 👉 Are we reaching out to the right talent or passively waiting? 👉 Does this ad reflect our brand’s quality? 👉 Is this ad part of a bigger plan? Focused hiring is the difference between filling spots and building a team with impact.

Reading the sad news about some of my former The CW Network colleagues has prompted me to come here and share (I’d shout if I could) my thoughts on the talented publicity and communications executives who will soon be entering the job market. Hire them…NOW! In leading the network's communications team for over 12 years, I had the joy of working alongside (and hiring) some of the most singularly gifted PR people in the business. This isn’t hyperbole. We were a small team, with limited resources (especially compared to everyone else), but they worked incredibly hard, against tall odds and stiff competition in a crowded media environment, and not only broke through the clutter, but helped shape popular culture. If you’ve heard of shows or the stars of Gossip Girl, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, Riverdale, Jane the Virgin, any of the DC Comics like Arrow or The Flash, or even further back to Gilmore Girls, America’s Next Top Model or Smallville, it’s because someone who worked in The CW Publicity team got their hands on them first and created the campaigns that pushed them into the public consciousness. There are the 3 key things you need to know about anyone coming from The CW Publicity team. They are exceptionally creative, doggedly tenacious and endlessly resourceful. Three core qualities any company, any team leader should be looking for in a public relations executive – whether you’re launching a show, movie, product or service. Anyone fortunate enough to be interviewing someone with The CW Publicity team on their resume, please reach out to me and I will gladly share their vast experience, extensive qualifications and a ringing endorsement. From the last ones standing who are currently being impacted, Jodi Karp, Judy Yam, Cyndee Ellefson, to my former CW publicity colleagues, Suzanne Gomez, Kellie Kulikowsky, Mandy Ellis Stepanovich, Carmen Davenporte McNeal, Jeff Tobler, Erin Moody, Lynn Esparo, on to greater things. All of them, passionate, intrepid and savvy professionals. Wear those CW stripes as a badge of honor, I know I do. #publicity #publicrelations #mediarelations

In the past week, PR/marketing professionals from healthcare companies reached out for my opinions on certain PR agencies. While happy to respond, I was upfront that my expertise is in B2B, not healthcare—and while I know the former agency landscape very well, the latter not really at all. Similarly, hiring managers asked for my feedback on candidates I 'worked with' nearly 20 years ago. While we were at the same orgs, I didn’t work directly with them, and informed them my insights would be outdated and incomplete. Lots of us give backdoor references regularly, and it’s important to be honest about the limits of our knowledge. If I don’t know enough (or next to nothing) about an agency or a candidate, I let the inquiring minds know. On the plus side, I love that more companies seem to be hiring for both agency and in-house! #pr #publicrelations #communications #careers

When joining a new PR consultancy or team, one key detail often overlooked is the client or sector you'll be working on. Whether it’s a beauty brand, real estate, or automotive, your personal passion for the industry plays a huge role in driving creativity, ownership, and success. This is especially true for junior to mid-level positions, where this conversation is hardly every brought up. However, alignment with the right industry from the very start can significantly help in shaping the career trajectory. Too often, agencies mention they can’t disclose the client’s name before joining (not sure why), but this conversation is crucial for ensuring a strong, mutually beneficial fit. Discussing this upfront ensures both parties are aligned, building a foundation of specialists rather than generalists. #PR #CareerGrowth #Hiring #Communications

Employers who are looking for employees, but are limiting themselves to people with a specific college degree, are not really interested in getting the best candidate for that position. What's more valuable: A 23 year old with a degree in journalism, OR, someone who has actually been a journalist for 20+ years? Someone with a degree in marketing, or someone who has worked as a Marketing Coordinator for multiple organizations? Experience matters. Degree's do not tell the whole story on what a potential employee can bring to a company.

The Real Cost of Unfilled PR Roles! Look, I get it - hiring is expensive, and agencies are watching every penny. But you know what's even more costly? Keeping roles open for too long. 🤔 🤔 An understaffed team means burnout, mistakes, and missed deadlines. It risks losing clients to competitors who are fully staffed and firing on all cylinders. Acquiring new clients is way pricier than keeping existing ones. 😓 😬 😳 Instead of cheaping out on hiring, partner with an experienced PR recruiter. Our modest fees are a drop in the bucket compared to the potential revenue hit from an extended vacancy. 🕵♂️ 💡 Don't nickel and dime your way into a staffing disaster. A good recruiter finds you top talent fast and protects your bottom line. It's an investment that pays off massively for your agency. 📈 📈 📈 #twsearchpartners #publicrelations #PRagency #PRweek #PRovokemedia #PR #hiring #recruiting
