WHAT IS AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE? The immune system has many complex mechanisms for achieving this. Every once in a while, something goes wrong. If the immune system incorrectly labels a normal healthy part of the body as being harmful, it might attack the healthy part just as if it were a harmful bacteria. This is called autoimmunity. Autoimmune diseases are also commonly referred to as connective tissue diseases, because the connective tissue in the body is often the target. Myth: Psoriasis is just a skin disease Fact: Psoriasis is more than a skin condition. It is a chronic disease of the immune system that has systemic effects i.e. other organs are affected. About 30-50% of all people with psoriasis also develop psoriatic arthritis which causes pain, stiffness and swelling in and around the joints. There is increasing evidence suggesting links with serious health concerns such as heart disease, diabetes, liver disease, some cancers, depression and obesity. In partnership with our collaborating organisations, the Global Psoriasis Atlas will contribute to raising awareness of psoriasis in order to allow them access to the best care for the skin and other affected organs. #psoriasis #psoriasisresearch #psoriasisawareness

The liver is an integral part of the human body, and is the only solid organ which can regenerate! (how cool!) This year's theme “Keep your liver healthy and disease-free” is such an important one as it emphasises the necessity of regular health check-ups to prevent liver-related disorders. This is especially important as the liver doesn't have pain receptors so it might take a while before you start feeling unwell and symptoms pop up. Did you know that one of the most prevalent liver diseases (steatotic liver disease) which affects over one third of the global population is under diagnosed? Don't be caught out! Do your liver a favour and have it checked in your next annual full body assessment! #worldliverday #STEM

People living with immune-mediated diseases like cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) and idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) deserve improved outcomes and sustained relief. These complex diseases remain hard to diagnose and treat. Through earlier intervention and personalised medicine approaches we are striving for remission, not just symptom management.
