39% of fighters are competing while seriously or significantly dehydrated! 💧🥵⚠️ Weight cutting by purposely dehydrating is a common practice in combat sports with the likes of Conor Mcgregor, Paddy Pimblett, Jon Jones, and Daniel Cormier all being known to have done so in their careers. McGregor himself has been known to have fluctuated around 45 pounds (20kg) in weight! Though an attempt to gain an advantage over the competition, the long term health dangers and negative impacts on performance, such as impaired glycogen use and central nervous system dysfunction, far outweighs any size advantage gained from the practice. Apart from the real dangers of weight cutting performed in mass by these athletes, safe and effective ways to drop weight have been demonstrated before. TJ Dillashaw, who worked closely with Performance Specialist Sam Calavitta from The Treigning Lab during the time, was able to successfully drop down a significant amount of weight for his title fight against Henry Cejudo in 2019. Dillashaw and Calavitta both were able to make this happen by carefully analysing recovery, diet, and hydration metrics in order to make the drop in weight class controlled and safe.
