Why don't more women invest? To channel Jodie Foster, "you're asking the wrong question." Read my thoughts on why we need to change the conversation about women and investing ahead of this month's NZ Shareholders Association women's investing events with Frances Cook. Hope to see you there. https://lnkd.in/gYwz4kuU #womeninvesting

This morning, I gathered with more than 3,000 other people at the Adelaide Convention Centre for the UN Women Australia's #IWD2024 💜 💜 💜 This year’s theme for International Women’s Day focuses on economic empowerment. There’s a raft of facts that are trotted out each time this sort of topic is discussed: 💜 The gender pay gap in Australia currently sits at about 13%. Industries in which women dominate are historically paid less. Women in male-dominated industries get paid less than their male colleagues. 💜 On average, women retire with $136,000 less in superannuation than their male colleagues. That’s $151,000 short of what is considered the amount needed for a “comfortable” retirement. In 2021, Carers Australia released a report that found that carers, on average, lose $392,500 in lifetime earnings. Here are a couple of other facts: 💜 12.3% of all women are carers 💜 70% of carers are women One stat that isn’t cited as frequently is that the peak age for female carers is 55-years old (compared to 75 for men). So who are these older, middle-aged carers? We talk about carers being those looking after ageing parents, or looking after children, or looking after spouses. What about the siblings whose parents are no longer able to look after their son or daughter with disability? And when I say “sibling”, it’s usually the sisters. The vast majority of adult siblings seeking support through Siblings Australia are women. They’ll often tell us about their brothers who are “providing support where they can” but the bulk of the heavy lifting is being done by the women of the family. And we know it impacts on them financially. They avoid promotions or job opportunities because they can’t take on additional responsibilities that will make it harder to get to appointments. They turn down networking opportunities because they need to be home to support their brother or sister. They choose part-time positions to juggle their supports. The sibling relationship is often the longest relationship of a person’s life. When we are talking about economic empowerment, it’s imperative that we recognise that a lot of sisters are stepping in to take on the support of their brothers or sisters – the “informal supports” that are often taken for granted – and their economic situation is being impacted by that decision. Sisters aren’t doing it for themselves: they are doing it for their siblings, and they need to be seen and supported. Today and every day. Thank you to Samantha H., Natalie Kerkman, Peter Gill, Natalie Fuller, Amber Schedlich, Melissa Monkhouse, Chloe Watts, Steven Bailey, and Dinah Thomasset Hearn for joining us; and Alexis McKay for your sensational coordination (and, yes, both Ministers Linda Burney and Penny Wong might've made me a bit misty).
Siblings Australia staff, board and invited guests were delighted to attend this mornings International Women's Day breakfast. Being in a room of almost 3,080 women and men is a testament to the support of this years theme #countherin : Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress. The event, hosted for the 22nd consecutive year by Senator Penny Wong, included insightful addresses by Annabel Crabb and The Hon Linda Burney MP. #iwd2024
