Belonging is a fundamental birthright. How do we create the conditions for authentic belonging? "So what are we then left with? Right? And for us, that really came down to, we got to make them give us what we want and Need. And it pushed us then towards thinking about power building. And I just want to draw the connection here. Us doing that is incredibly unharmonious, right? If anything, it's downright taking a position of being antagonistic at times towards systems. Not to say that we want to tear all of them down and none of them work or anything, but like this antagonism was rooted in a deep love, a deep desire for them to function in different ways." Been listening to Simu Liu's memoir, We Were Dreamers, and I've gotten to the part where he talks about his parents beating him... While many people might be aghast, this was just like my upbringing. Rolling pins to open palms. Feather dusters to backs of thighs. Kneeling on linoleum facing a corner. Those were simply normal occurrences. For tiger parenting. For children of immigrants. We were expected to be perfect. To make sense of the sacrifices our parents made for us. We were now expected to talk back. To have feelings. To fight back. That's precisely why I created my podcast. Because tiger parenting is still alive and well. And for someone who's been raised in two opposing cultures — Asian and American — we need people to see us. To hear us. To understand us. Because there are beautiful gifts from our family of origin. There are wonderful opportunities in the country where we were raised. There's also a lot of pain. When we feel seen and heard, we can articulate the healing that we need. May you find a resource that gives you the words, too.
