As a former Apple retail trainer from 2013 to 2019 and as manager later in my career, I've seen firsthand the impact of managerial strategies on employee morale. It takes years to build trust within a team but only a few bad management decisions to lose it. Here are 4 lessons from my retail experience that will help you to build trust and connect with your retail employees. Lesson #1: Actively Listen to Your Employees --------------------------------------------- Active listening is crucial. As trainers deeply engaged with customers, we gathered insights often missed by managers who merely observed from afar. To improve, spend a day in your employees' shoes: • Engage directly with both staff and customers. • Reflect on the experience to understand the daily challenges and successes. Lesson #2: Trust Your Employees’ Expertise -------------------------------------------- Our team knew how to tailor training for diverse customer groups because we understood their needs intimately. Trust your team’s expertise by: • Empowering them to shape their approach to customer interactions. • Allowing them creative freedom to achieve set goals, enhancing both customer experience and job satisfaction. Lesson #3: Understand the Complexity of Your Employees' Jobs ---------------------------------------------------------------- Managing customer complaints, inventory issues, and maintaining positivity is challenging. Increase your understanding and empathy by: • Spending regularly a full shift doing the tasks of your retail employees. • Using your firsthand experiences to discuss and improve workplace policies and support systems. Lesson #4: Avoid Comparing Your Employees --------------------------------------------- Each employee brings unique strengths to the team. Avoid comparisons that can diminish morale and create unnecessary competition. Instead: • Recognize and celebrate individual achievements. • Encourage a team environment where diversity is seen as an asset, not a hindrance. Consider how a manager once made you feel supported and valued. Apply these behaviors to your management style to transform your workplace into one where employees are motivated and morale is high.
