Fantastic to be part of this panel on challenges and opportunities for sustainable agriculture. I do wonder if we are putting the cart before the horse. With many companies scrambling to service the demand for carbon removal, and the data required to validate this, there still doesn’t appear to be much thought as to how family farms can economically achieve this on top of the day job of food production, particularly when many farms have some very basic needs to fulfill first off to make the businesses more efficient - like improved working facilities, better infrastructure such as roads, grid connections and phone signal, and ability to deal with volatile weather. What technology will farmers need to service a carbon credit market, how much will it cost, what does everybody want to measure, will it really make a difference, how can they get a fair price without being exploited, have they got time? So many questions.
Our next panel sheds light on the balancing act for farmers to comply with evolving regulations whilst practicing sustainable business management. Here to express the farmers’ perspectives on policy schemes, adoption of new technology and the pace of innovation are: Helen Browning, Chief Executive, Soil Association Daniel Cross, Managing Director, Dyson Farming Ben Makowiecki, Agriculture Sustainability Director, Lloyds Banking Group Abi Reader, Farmer & Deputy President, GOLDSLAND FARM/NFU (National Farmers' Union) Sophie Throup, Technical and Sustainability Director – Manufacturing, Morrisons
