Nearly five years after COVID-19 first struck, emergency departments across the country remain bogged down by lengthy waiting times. At the start of this year, only one in ten Ontario hospitals met the provincial target waiting time for patients with serious conditions, compared with 25% before the pandemic. Conversely, our Apotex Emergency Department has the shortest time for admitted emergency cases. Much of this success comes from the Command Centre, allowing the hospital to use real time data to analyze the flow of patients and detect when urgent measures are required – ensuring positive patient outcomes and experiences. At Humber, innovation is not a luxury, but a necessity. Read the full article in The Globe and Mail: https://lnkd.in/gkUvWpqT

the paretto principle is applicable in every field. Quality services can be achieved if quality products are available and are cost effective.

I am a disciple of the pareto principle of 80/20. And when it comes to #HealthcareQuality, I am a believer that by just focusing on #PatientSafety and #InfectionPrevention, we can deliver 80% of our quality objectives. In today's NationAfrica I argue that every hospital can easily observe the Joint Commission 6 International Patient Safety Goals as a starting point. Yesterday I attended FIP's Digital event, World Humanitarian Day: Pharmacists on the frontline. It was an eye opener, highlighting the responsibilities and challenges faced by pharmacists in the field. It also provided key information on how to upskill yourself to be an asset as an Humanitarian pharmacist. My takeaways: ● As pharmacists we have had first aid training, however, it is vital to stay up to date with that training, considering we don't use it daily. ● In hospital pharmacies, we dispense numerous medical supplies, but we probably have no idea how they may work. ● Humanitarian pharmacists have to think beyond pharmaceutical treatment, as access to medicine and medical supplies are limited. Therefore, having knowledge on alternative and/or natural treatment for illnesses and using house hold items in place of medical supplies can help civilians in need. If you're interested in Humanitarian work, expand your knowledge, you never know what you may need to do when disaster occurs. International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) is involved in Humanitarian work in Ukraine, Syria and other disaster stricken areas, so let us come together to support the #ActforHumanity campaign to protect those Humanitarian workers.
On #WorldHumanitarianDay, FIP’s CEO Catherine Duggan highlights the vital roles that pharmacists play in humanitarian crises and emergency settings, which include assessing patients’ needs, managing medicines supplies and coordinating with other healthcare professionals to ensure patient safety.
