We're excited to announce our support for one of our outstanding MPA students, Linda Nathan, who is running for the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) National Council Student Representative position! Linda shares, "I am honored to seek your support as the Student Representative for ASPA’s National Council. With nearly 20 years of experience advocating for marginalized communities, particularly those with disabilities, I have consistently worked to ensure access to vital services and resources. My background as a military spouse, mother, and advocate has shaped my understanding of systemic challenges and inequities, driving my commitment to public service. As someone deeply invested in diversity, equity, and inclusion, I bring a unique perspective that emphasizes collaboration, mentorship, and empowerment. My experience spans addressing gaps in service, especially for underrepresented communities, and mentoring young professionals to help them succeed in their careers. If elected, I will continue to amplify diverse voices within ASPA and ensure that all members have access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive. By supporting me, you’re voting for a representative who understands the importance of fostering an inclusive and equitable environment within ASPA and the communities we serve. Thank you for your consideration." If you're an ASPA member, we encourage you to consider voting for her in the upcoming election. Let's support emerging public administration leaders who are dedicated to creating positive change! https://lnkd.in/e6SmRMs3 #MPA #ASPA #PublicService #StudentRepresentative #Vote #TarletonStateUniversity

NCAPA inducted four new members to the coalition: the Asian and Pacific Americans in Higher Education, APAPA National, APIAHiP: Asian & Pacific Islander Americans in Historic Preservation, and Hindus for Human Rights. Asian and Pacific Americans in Higher Education is an organization dedicated to enhancing the educational opportunities for Asian and Pacific American students; promoting and supporting the hiring, retention, and advancement of qualified Asian and Pacific American faculty, staff, and administrators; and creating a better understanding of issues in the public affecting Asian and Pacific Americans in higher education. APAPA - Asian Pacific American Public Affairs Association aims to promote the advancement of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans through active participation and leadership in civic and public affairs. The organization educates the public about public policy and provides opportunities for our youth to gain firsthand knowledge and experience in governmental and public affairs. APIAHiP: Asian & Pacific Islander Americans in Historic Preservation is the only national organization dedicated to protecting historic places and cultural resources significant to Asian and Pacific Islander Americans. They achieve this by cultivating an information-sharing network to connect and support local communities and their historic preservation efforts, offering educational programs and strategic or technical services that enable communities to preserve their heritage through a place-based ethic, and advocating to increase public and private resources and lower barriers for historic preservation at local, state, and national levels. Hindus for Human Rights advocates for pluralism, civil and human rights in South Asia and North America, rooted in the values of our faith: shanti (peace), nyaya (justice) and satya (truth). They provide a Hindu voice of resistance to caste, Hindutva (Hindu nationalism), racism, and all forms of bigotry and oppression.

I'm pleased to announce that Part 2 of Suzanne Martin's and my history of the Council for Exceptional Children's international engagement has recently been published in the Journal of International Special Needs Education. Here's its abstract: Using the results of an integrative literature review of primary sources of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC)—news articles, reports of initiatives and workgroups, and columns in CEC publications that provided evidence of the Council’s international efforts—we describe instances of international engagement within five functions of the Council as a professional organization for exceptional education: advocacy, professional development, conferences, the translation of CEC content, and its recognition as a leading organization in the field. We believe the efforts can be categorized as serving either one or both simple though challenging goals: bringing the world to CEC and the Division of International Special Education and Services (DISES) and bringing CEC and DISES to the world. Progress has occurred on these goals, albeit sporadically and intermittently. As this history looks to the past, it points to the future. The instances of international engagement that once were provide examples of what can be again to pursue these goals.

DkIT researcher Dianne McPhelim has been awarded a prestigious Government of Ireland Postgraduate Research Scholarship through Taighde Éireann– Research Ireland for her project engaging with the writings of Monaghan woman Mamo McDonald, an important female figure in the latter half of the twentieth century in Ireland. The study will focus on one of Ireland's forgotten female voices, one whose influence and activism were lauded by Mary Robinson and Nell McCaffrey. Mamo McDonald, a key figure in bringing the voice of the rural community to the fore, was a prominent campaigner for women’s rights in law and health, a champion of higher education, ICA President, and later founder of Age Action. The three-year scholarship will allow Dianne to develop this project, which has substantial local significance, and explore options to draw attention to this remarkable figure. Dianne will contribute to a vibrant research community at DkIT, where the Creative Arts Research Centre unites researchers from music and media to foster synergies between the arts, humanities, and innovative technologies. https://lnkd.in/eg66hyWg #carc #mamomcdonald #dkitpostgrad

Great insights, many of the challenges and opportunities in regional education can be understood through the following observations that cut across early childhood education, schools and tertiary education. 1. Support needs to be timely and appropriately targeted to improve access to and participation in education. 2. Helping regional students and prospective students understand their options for future pathways by improving careers advice and building aspiration as early as primary school will help them to realise their potential, support their ambition, and create great futures for themselves. 3. Policy makers and funding bodies should allow for flexible delivery models, as the opportunities and challenges of education in regional Australia are different from the opportunities and challenges in our cities. 4. ‘Homegrown’ workforces will improve the opportunity for regional people to stay in their local regions, and to strengthen regional development. The issue of regional workforce shortages has been a recurrent theme of stakeholder feedback in my discussions over the last two years, and supporting students who want to remain in regional communities to study will help local industries and businesses to grow, and contribute to alleviating workforce shortages in critical sectors like education and health. 5. Finally, locally based solutions and local expertise and knowledge are necessary to underpin all these activities.
Australia’s Regional Education Commissioner, the Hon Fiona Nash, has released her 2023 Annual Report. Key themes in the report include: 1. Helping regional students and prospective students understand their options for future pathways by improving careers advice and building aspiration as early as primary school. 2. ‘Homegrown’ workforces will improve the opportunity for regional people to stay in their local regions, and to strengthen regional development. 3. Locally based solutions and local expertise and knowledge are necessary to improve education outcomes. As Commissioner, Ms Nash is a champion for the educational needs of regional students across early childhood, schools, vocational education and training and higher education. I typically try to separate my political activity from my work/education activity. However, I learned recently during an advocacy training that “stating a fact is not partisanship”. Here is a fact: Project 2025 is going to be devestating for higher education. If you find yourself in the field of higher ed, it would be on your best interest to get familiar with it. Here are some of the most dubious findings that I have come across: - my title/job responsibility goes away under this plan. All references to diversity, equity, inclusion will be stripped from schools that receive federal dollars. - the federal Department of Education will be dismantled. After this years FAFSA debacle, which undoubtedly left a sour taste in the mouths of enrollment management folks, imagine no oversight to the FAFSA process at all. - Accreditation agencies will become voluntary and no longer be tied to receiving federal finances, and put colleges in a position of providing “voluntary quality assurance”, meaning all standards of effective higher education management will be moot. Yall, this is serious. Please get educated on it. https://lnkd.in/ghv2zJU9
