Individuals in high performing teams have the ability to know how their co-workers, partners, or teammates are going to react to a given situation. Good managers can cultivate the environment for this kind of shared cognition and reap the rewards from it, but developing the ability to see situations from someone else's perspective needs to come from the individual. Senge, in The Fifth Disciple, said that "organizations don't learn, people do." If the managers set the tone to have a learning organization where soft skills are seens as equally important to the technical skills, then the learning becomes part of the system. A bit of explanation on Senge's personal mastery from the article: "You have to get workers to care enough about soft skills that their self-building drive is turned on and focused on mastering the missing soft skills."

I feel like all of us in the soft skills business say the same thing, "I hate it when what we do is called soft skills." And yet the name remains. I don't know what's "soft" about culture change, human behavior, navigating relationships or knowing how to have difficult conversations. I believe this are the "hard skills". Humans are complicated. There is NEVER a one size fits all and it requires continuous work. You'll never be done. I love the intro to this article. It's all true, it's all hard. Bruce Tulgan says, When there is a gap in soft skills, Good hires are overlooked Good hires go bad Bad hires go worse Misunderstandings abund People get distracted Productivity goes down Mistakes are made Customer service suffers Coflicts occur Good people leave People leave because of culture.
