Check out Our Turn's new report on student voice in budgeting! As a student who experienced the COVID-19 pandemic, I know how vital education transformation can be. Through writing this report, I have realized that budgeting is a method to make that transformation happen; but budgeting can't be effective without the people most impacted: students. I hope this report can help increase student engagement in all aspects of the education system, ultimately leading to authentic change.
With the rise of chronic absenteeism, teacher shortages, and the looming expiration of COVID-era school funding, it is now more vital than ever to empower our students in school budgetary decision-making processes. In our new report, Transforming Education Through Student Engagement in School Budgeting, our team led by Dr. Christine Pitts and Our Turn fellow Addie Lentzner explore the obstacles preventing meaningful student participation in school budgeting and introduce a rubric to help districts improve student engagement in budgeting decisions. It’s time for our students to be co-pilots in these decisions, not passengers. Read the report to learn more and uncover the ways you can be a part of transforming our education system today: https://lnkd.in/dS5n-gdd #OurTurnTransformingEducation #StudentEmpowerment #EducationEquity

School principals listen up: Teachers hate chasing overdue school fees. You know it. But you still ask them to do it. Teachers won’t tell you they hate it. (At least not in your face) But you might be building up unnecessary resentment. Which could hurt morale. The result? Admin work goes up, teaching quality goes down. There’s a better way. Use technology like automated reminders to remind STUDENTS when they tap their attendance. That’s just one way, we’ve created a free guide with 5 effective ways to get parents pay school fees on time without involving teachers. Following on from Baroness Barran's discussion on attendance recently, the FFT team have been looking at the % of pupils who are absent for between 5% and 15% of the time. Perhaps, as expected the data shows that a larger proportion of these students are identified as FSM6 or SEND. It is interesting to note that almost 50% of pupils at primary and secondary level have an absence of 5% or less, with a third of young people missing between 5% and 15%. This clearly highlights the need for school staff to be curious and to discuss short periods of absence in a supportive way with both young people and their families. Often we focus on the students who have significant levels of absence ( the 8% at primary and 15% at secondary) and lose sight of the middle band. By asking the questions "we've noticed that......is there anything we can do to support....." and intervening earlier when there are patterns to absence or odd days of absence schools can improve their attendance for the majority of young people.
