Can First Aid case become Lost Time Injury (LTI): Injuries resulting in one or more missed workdays (OSHA)? Yes it can ! Minor injuries/ first aid case can occasionally lead to Lost Time Injuries (LTI) if the employee needs a full recovery period before returning to work. Some examples include: 1. Sprains and Strains: A minor muscle strain, such as a pulled back muscle, may not seem severe but could require days away from work if it impairs movement or tasks. These cases might involve rest or limited activities before returning. 2. Minor Cuts Requiring Stitches: A small laceration might be minor in severity but could lead to an LTI if stitches are required and the employee is unable to perform certain tasks, such as lifting or operating machinery, while healing. 3. Minor Burns: Superficial burns (e.g., first-degree burns) might seem minor, but if they’re on parts of the body like hands or feet, they could prevent the employee from effectively performing certain tasks, leading to time off. 4. Eye Irritations: An eye irritation caused by dust or chemicals can prevent an employee from seeing clearly or comfortably and might necessitate a recovery period before resuming regular duties. Could you give more examples? So we should not confuse between: Classification by Severity of Treatment : which are FAC, MT and Fatality, and Classification by Absence or Work Impact: : which are RWI, LTI and Fatality Please enrich us with your thoughts and experience

Safety remains a top priority at Jebsen & Jessen Hamburg Group. Last week, 18 employees participated in a comprehensive First Aid Course designed to equip them with essential skills to act as first responders in case of workplace injuries. The session provided practical and hands-on training, reinforcing the importance of safety preparedness in the workplace. While the hope is to never need these skills, the training ensures employees are equipped to respond effectively if required. Basic First Aid Participants were introduced to the fundamentals of first aid, including the definition and importance of immediate care. Practical exercises focused on treating minor injuries such as small cuts and the proper application of pressure bandages. First Aid Kit Familiarization The group reviewed the company’s first aid kit, learning about the purpose of various items, including sterile supplies and materials for treating burns. Emphasis was placed on knowing how to use the tools effectively during emergencies. Life-Saving Techniques The training included crucial life-saving techniques such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the correct use of a defibrillator. The defibrillator’s location at the reception desk was highlighted to ensure accessibility in emergencies. Recognizing Symptoms Participants were trained to recognize signs of medical conditions, including sunstroke and poisoning, enhancing their ability to respond quickly and appropriately to critical situations. Thank you to our trainer from DRK Kreisverband Hamburg-Nordost e.V. for delivering an engaging and practical session that contributes to a safer workplace for all!

In my previous post, we discussed about First Aid Case can also become Restricted Work or Lost Time Injury, https://lnkd.in/gUuna4zQ But what about Medical Treatment Case? is it automatically become RWI or LTI? and of course you know the answer is... depends.. Case : After an accident, an employee is diagnosed with closed fracture of right index finger, and treated with rigid splint. Based on the SEVERITY, this is considered as Medical Treatment case. But to classify based on the WORK IMPACT , we need to see the Job Specification of the employee. It could be : Return To Work (RTW) : if the employee can return to their job and perform most of their duties immediately after treatment. For example, a safety inspector, customer service, social media streamer, which jobs description are not heavily stressing the injured area. Restricted Work Injury (RWI) : that allows the employee to work with restrictions or modified duties due to the injury. For example, machine operator, driver, typist. They can still work, but need adjustment and the injury will most likely limit them to go back to their previous tasks. Lost Time Injury (LTI) : resulting in an employee being unable to work for one or more shifts due to severity. Examples of jobs are are surgeon, pianist, guitarist, dentist, and other jobs that rely heavily on the injured area, and otherwise needs it to be completely recovered before they are able to return to work. The Conclusion, do not confuse the injury classification by Severity of Treatment and Classification by Absence or Work Impact. Also consider the scope of work of the worker. Same injury can result in different work impact classification. Your thoughts and expertise would be very much appreciated !

Ensuring Hospital Safety During Fire Evacuations #15 *Safe Maneuvering Training and Techniques to Improve Road Safety Awareness and Skills Two alternative methods to Safe Maneuvering Training are the National Fire Protection Association's drills and carrying out an operational exercise with psychologists, security staff, and collaborators of the hospitals involved as a Surrogate Hospital Stress Test. Safe Maneuvering Training is an essential program designed to equip staff members with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively cope with areas of refuge and execute safe maneuvers during the evacuation of patients. This comprehensive training encompasses the utilization of both unobstructed and obstructed escape routes and employs various techniques to optimize the evacuation process. The training typically commences with engaging classroom sessions or self-study lectures, providing a solid theoretical foundation. This theoretical knowledge is then supplemented by practical experience gained within a clinical environment. Participants are introduced to a meticulously designed kit that faithfully replicates a hospital setting, complete with bedding bundles and lifelike mannequins. To ensure minimal time is spent during the evacuation process, several strategies are employed. These include mastering the art of swiftly folding IV stands to their lowest position, detaching the IV poles from their base, and securely fastening them to the beds. Moreover, proactive measures such as organizing patient files in advance, obtaining personal protective equipment, including gloves and masks, and minimizing the need for patients to traverse on foot are integral components of this training. Additionally, the use of assistive walking devices or the reliance on a patient's arm for transportation purposes is highly encouraged. Recognizing the importance of realistic simulations, it has been proposed that patient evacuation training of this nature be seamlessly integrated into heavy workload simulations. By doing so, participants can efficiently practice and refine their skills in scenarios that closely mirror real-life situations. A key aspect of this training approach is the promotion of teamwork. Each task is not solely the responsibility of an individual but rather necessitates coordinated efforts among team members. The actions to be undertaken must be performed interchangeably, ensuring a seamless and efficient evacuation process. Safe maneuvering training stands as a crucial pillar in ensuring the safety and well-being of both patients and staff members during emergency situations. By empowering individuals with the necessary expertise and resources, this training program significantly enhances their overall preparedness and ability to handle patient evacuations effectively.
