Happy International Pi Day! Pi Day is celebrated annually on March 14th as the numerical date corresponds with the first three digits of pi. It’s also Albert Einstein’s birthday. Pi Day is commonly celebrated with dessert or pizza pies. Here at Ledyard, we are celebrating the holiday by contemplating budgets. If you think about your finances like slices of pie, you can divide them into expenses, savings, investments, and spending money. Each slice will vary in size, and you want to make sure none of them wander off! Because who doesn’t love pie? MoneyMap can help you keep track of all of those pieces in one convenient place! Hey everyone, it's CJFS here! 🌟 You probably already know that March 14th is celebrated as Pi Day because the first three digits of π are 3.14! 🎉 But did you know that Indiana state lawmakers once debated rounding this mathematical concept up to 3.2? Crazy, right? In honor of Pi Day, I wanted to share some fascinating pi trivia with all of you: 1️⃣ Pi is defined as the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. It's mind-blowing how this simple concept connects to the shape of everything around us! 2️⃣ It's an irrational number, meaning its decimal representation goes on forever without repeating. Mathematicians have calculated trillions of digits, but let's stick with 3.14 for today's festivities! 3️⃣ Have you ever noticed the breathtaking circular shape of the Pantheon's dome in Rome? That's a prime example of pi at work in architecture, creating structures of timeless beauty. 4️⃣ Interestingly, some people celebrate Pi Approximation Day on 22/7 because the fraction 22/7 is a common approximation of pi. Double the pi fun, right? 5️⃣ And here's a fun fact: back in 1897, a doctor in Indiana proposed a bill to the state legislature that would have rounded pi up to 3.2. Thankfully, after some debate, the bill didn't move forward, and mathematicians everywhere rejoiced (we assume). Phew! Now, let's talk about another form of "pi" that's equally delightful – "pie!" 🥧 I got into a friendly debate about the best flavor, and I need your help to settle it. Comment below ⬇️ with your favorite pie flavor and let's see which one reigns supreme! Happy Pi Day, my friends! Let's celebrate this mathematical marvel and indulge in some delicious pie together. 🥳✨

AI machines misbehave. They make errors, they hallucinate. But they do so while pretending to be absolutely certain about their answers. What would happen if we designed an AI machine that didn’t pretend to be so certain... that would openly misbehave? Come along to the launch of “Misbehaving AI answer machine” next Tuesday 10 December from 4 pm and hear from Head Librarian Michael Gonzalez, Project Lead: A/Prof Heather Ford, Deputy CEO, Australian Library and Information Association Trish Hepworth and Senior Librarian Alycia Bailey, and meet designers Dr Andrew Burrell and Dr Monica Monin. "AI in the Library" is a pilot project sponsored by the University of Technology Sydney and a partnership between the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), the State Library of New South Wales (SLNSW) and the New South Wales Public Libraries Association (NSWPLA), UTS Data and AI Ethics Cluster and the Critical Digital Visualisations Design Research Group. Libraries participating in the pilot project include City of Parramatta, City of Sydney, TAFE NSW and UTS Libraries.
The AI in the Library team has now installed all four "The Making of Misbehaving Machines" currently showing at Green Square, Parramatta City, TAFE NSW Ultimo and UTS libraries (the UTS exhibit, seen below, is in the main lobby waiting patiently for our launch on Tuesday before it moves upstairs). Come and join us to celebrate this wonderful pilot project with words, drinks and nibbles at UTS Tue, 10 Dec, 4pm - 5pm. (With Trish Hepworth, Andrew Burrell, Monica Monin, Suneel Jethani (PhD) and Bhuva Narayan) https://lnkd.in/dzRvvsTv

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗵 David and Goliath is a tale of facing challenges that seem insurmountable. This is the story of AiME and DECA. None of our team members had ever participated in a district competition before. We entered one of the most competitive events, the Start-Up Business Plan, in the largest district in Texas, District 7. After months of meticulous planning, we finally arrived at the competition. Despite our preparation, some of us forgot our lines during the presentation. Yet, we improvised on the spot, and it turned out even better than the scripted version. As we waited for the results, we watched many of our classmates get rejected for the state competition. The closer it got to our names, the more nervous I became. But against all odds, we were called up. I received the district medal with sweaty palms and a huge smile. We thought, if the district competition was this tough, what would States be like? When we arrived in Houston for the state competition, we believed we had everything under control. However, we soon discovered that our competition paper, containing all the crucial information about our product, wasn't printed correctly. We spent hours walking back and forth, trying to find a place that could print it properly. We walked about 5 miles within a 1-mile zone we were told not to cross. Finally, we found a local business that could print it for us, just an hour before our presentation. This left us exhausted and, honestly, unprepared. Even though we didn’t qualify for the national competition, the experience and knowledge we gained were invaluable. The time we spent and the lessons we learned have shaped AiME into what it is today. This competition is only the beginning.
