Money talks: $10k to start a new career makes all the difference: "How dangling a $10k carrot has helped private bus companies woo younger S’porean drivers". Smart use of money to persuade people to take up a career that their family and friends would tell them not to. "Westpoint announced a revised pay structure where the starting monthly salary for driving a medium-sized bus is $3,500, while that for a driver of a 45-seater charter bus is $5,000. This is above the starting salaries offered by private bus companies that range from $1,800 to $4,500, according to listings on recruitment websites. Westpoint’s attractive figures are sweetened further by a joining bonus of $7,500 for those driving a medium-sized bus and $10,000 for those driving a 45-seater. The only catch to the company’s bonus offer is that hired drivers must serve a three-year bond and will receive the quantum in batches, up till their sixth month. If they decide to leave before the full bond is served, they must pay back a pro-rated portion of the bonus. Westpoint director Lionel Lee told ST that Mr Liow – who will be driving a medium-sized bus – is one of seven candidates that the company has offered a job to. Since its December announcement, Westpoint has received over 1,300 applications, 30 of whom are graduates like Mr Liow, added Mr Lee. Westpoint aims to hire up to another 23 Singaporean or permanent resident drivers by mid-April." Having a bond is not unusual, SQ have one for example. LET'S THROW BACK SINCE IT'S THURSDAY #2: I was at the Muritala International Airport, Lagos with a former German client. We were both boarding a #Lufthansa flight. The resident chaos at a typical #African airport was proceeding as usual and I was calm and sweaty while holding a nice conversation. My German friend was really upset at the lack of engineering precision in the operations. I couldn’t blame him, after all they gave the world #Mercedes #Benz, the best or nothing. He tried to explain his frustration, I tried to calm him down. A few months later the story was reversed. I was with my #Duke #MBA classmates in #Prague and we have been sent on a field trip by our prof. We got to the taxi park in #Prague and tried to negotiate the fare to our destination. I was ready for the exercise, after all I’m a #Nigerian and we negotiate everything. The #Czech cab drivers calmly told us the fare was non negotiable given that it was calculated based on the exact distance. They then calmly advised us of a short cut by foot since we clearly couldn’t afford the fare. I had turned totally flummoxed and red though my dark couldn’t show it. How could anyone in the world not be willing to #negotiate? Clearly the #Czech don’t. And then I finally shared the frustration of my German client. In that moment I realized that #Karma was an international citizen of the planet. We all have experiences like this especially in the #business world. #Executives struggling from market to market trying to understand why things are done differently. Some even returning to their home country lest their illustrious career is ruined by lack of impact. The issue is always the same - we use the #lens of our point of origin to view our destination. And we get it wrong all the time. I used to spend day trips with my family, but I have little adults now, so they are never home. The couch and a good show to watch. There is just what needs to be done to make sure the client and customers are taken care of. 🟢 1.10 pm, Monday 18 March 2024 I'm taking my lunch break at Elizabeth Quay Bus Station all this week, Dear Reader. Although you can't tell from the pic, the station is currently awash with numerous groups of school kids (presumably on some kind of excursion) and the occasional interdispersed (and rather stressed-looking) teacher. Seems there's something on at the Convention Centre next door to the station, but I have no idea what it is. ------- On the 201 service from Curtin University Bus Station to Cannington earlier today, a ponytail-clad young man boarded the bus with a friendly smile and seemed keen to have a chat. I soon discovered he was currently studying both Marketing and Psychology. "Why those two?" I asked, inquisitively. "Because I can't really make up my mind what I want to do," he replied, candidly. "Want my advice?" "Shoot." "Don't base your career decisions on dollars and cents alone. Base them on what'll bring you the most fulfilment in the long term. In other words, don't try to force your square peg into a round hole. You'll only end up resenting it." "Thanks. That's really helpful." Whether he was just being polite to this fifty-something bus driver, I have no idea. But he seemed genuinely grateful. ------- I'll close today's diary entry with my new most commonly used four-letter word: UBER (Usually accompanied by a more colourful expletive—under my breath, of course.) Smile for the Camera! 📷 Such a fun day filming yesterday at our StarTrack Facility in Minchinbury! Throughout the day, our crew were interviewing a variety of employees comprising of drivers and freight handlers. We loved hearing about their role, why they love it and why they would recommend the role to others! Our aim? To allow you to hear what our workplace is like from people who are actually doing the job! I hope that job seekers find this helpful and it encourages individuals from all walks of life to apply for a role in Transport. It truly is a fantastic role. The problem? 🧐 Did you know there is a shortage of truck drivers on the road all over the world, not just in Australia? The contributing factors include: - Ageing workforce - Many experienced drivers are reaching retirement age, and there hasn't been a sufficient influx of younger drivers to replace them. - Regulations - Lack of appeal to the younger generation - Work/life balance - Pandemic Impact - The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated existing challenges within the transportation industry, including disruptions to supply chains, fluctuations in demand, and concerns about health and safety on the job. A failure to address these issues can create further disruptions and delays to our supply chain. With this said - Without trucks, Australia Stops. Our plan? 📝 - Create a better awareness to combat the perception of what it is to work for Transport! Utilising social media platforms to engage with diverse audience segments will enable us to broaden our reach, attracting a larger pool of individuals to explore opportunities within the transportation sector. - Vox pop has emerged as a social media trend, celebrated for its ability to generate interactive, genuine, and immediate responses to inquiries. Leveraging this approach, we've conducted interviews with our employees, capturing unfiltered and authentic perspectives. Our aim is to reinforce a true perception of frontline staff through these candid exchanges. - Implementing a transport pathways program. No truck license? No worries! We've assembled a committed team to provide candidates with the necessary support, training, and confidence essential for safe road delivery. While we are prioritising our internal candidates first, we will look into rolling this out externally soon. And many more projects soon to be announced, stay tuned! A friend of mine has moved to a new place, where it is said that rickshaw drivers are angry about immigrants from other states coming for jobs. To the extent that many times they refuse to ferry such people. “It must be tough for you,” I said to him on the phone yesterday. “It was in the beginning,” he admitted. “Most drivers said no while others grudgingly agreed. Then, I started asking the drivers to teach me simple words in their language. Like, thank you, how was your day, bye, and so on. “I was terrified the first time, especially because the guy looked so grumpy. But when I asked him how to say ‘bye’ in his language, he said he didn’t know (he always said it in English) and we both laughed. He waved to me and left after dropping me off. “The more I asked such questions, the more I stepped outside my comfort zone. Plus, the locals and I found common ground which made us friends. And I learned a new language.” Now my friend can hail a rickshaw just like a local. It’s not that everyone agrees to ferry him, but his success rate is much higher. He's also comfortable interacting with other locals in shops, hotels, and other places. It has left me with the questions: 1. When we come across a hostile person, what is a small step we can take to find common ground? 2. How can we extend our hands without bending over backward? 3. How can we see their side of things to broaden our perspective? These are valid questions to ponder over and implement, no? #selfimprovement #relationships #comfortzone #learning
