Virtools was massively ahead of it's time - I came across it in 1999 and used it professionally from 2004 to 2010. I learned a massive amount from it. I always felt its product potential was misunderstood by many - I would argue not only from outside but also from inside the team as well. Like every tech it wasn't perfect but many things fixable without a major rewrite (I believe). Anyways, unfortunately they went the opposite direction of democratisation, trying to to become something different - but was a hard read to get right when being that early in the market and when being under financial pressure. Fun fact: using its Entity & Attributes architecture I was able to do one-to-many controllers in the style of ECS back then already - it wasn't cache-optimised but improved the performance for other reasons. So basically one could argue that it had an ECS like architecture over two decades ago. Any chance we can get Dassault Systèmes to release the code for fun and nostalgia ?
