Very constructive the congress AquaWatt at PIACENZA EXPO S.P.A. ❓ One of the key output? ❗ More collaboration among public/governmental authorities, industry, research centers and sectorial organisations/associations is needed to face with the high complexity of #hydropower and #dams, and to accomplish the green and clean transition #GreenerTogether. Dams and hydropower are key instruments for the energy transition (renewable energy, flexibility and water&energy storage) and for #water #resilience (water storage in reservoirs, flood control, water supply in emergency situations), but also come with challenges that should be addressed with new technologies and with a strategic planning within each river basin and within the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) nexus, considering benefits and impacts. new multi-purpose dams may serve different uses and mitigate climate change effects. It is extremely important to act and optimize the existing fleet and make it more updated considering the future climatic scenarios and with the environment as a priority. Alternative solutions may be more sustainable in certain contexts (e.g., storing water in green infrastructures, aquifer recharge), while in other contexts acting on existing dams (de-sedimentation, modernisation, dam heightening, hybridisation with photovoltaics) could represent a win-win solution. Water saving measures, water and wastewater reuse, remain no-regret options that have to be implemented everywhere. At the same time, the benefits, challenges and impacts of other technologies (PV, wind, batteries) should be also discussed in order to achieve an integrated energy systems that does not leave behind any of the aspects of the WEFE nexus, and that recognizes the burden that hydropower plants are undergoing (start&stop cycles, O&M) in favour of the other renewable energy technologies. It has been not only constructive but also inspiring. It will be very important, to me, that #Hydroelectric business finds similar spaces to debate and to plan how to act in new scenarios. #AquaWatt can become a useful platform of ideas and solution sharing. #Hydroelectric needs #innovation to be a fundamental part of the #energy #transition. The so called mature Business as normally Hydroelectric is considered, must act as a start up to catch new opportunities. #Hybridization with #Battery or #PV plant on its asset leveraging on #technology and #IoT are key factor to improve, also, the resilience of the territory. The capillarity of the infrastructure is a key element to boost #sustainability. For sure it will be needed a dedicated regulatory framework. It should become a common practice and a normal mindset for each significant Hydro maintenance to check if some smart improvements can be included. #Continuous #desedimentation #grid #frequency #control, increase the height of a Dams to add water storage and why not phytodepuration of water to be added in the basins should become a common practice and a well known business case to be selected according to local peculiarity. Not to catch this opportunity means to slow energy transition or to buy more litio battery with higher costs and environmental impacts

🌱🔄 We make it circular: Refurbish 🔄🌱 Complex systems such as beehives 🐝 or anthills are habitats for entire colonies, where all processes are coordinated. But even intelligent systems like these suffer wear out over time, due to the weather, external influences or natural wear and tear. Instead of building them from scratch, bees or ants work continuously to refurbish their systems and thus maintain them. Like nature, Voith strives to consistently implement the six elements of the #circulareconomy: #reduce, #reuse, #repair, #refurbish, #recycle and #rethink. Hydropower plants are also complex and intelligent systems with a long lifespan like beehives or anthills. Voith is the expert for refurbishing, overhauling and maintaining them. 💦 Many hydropower facilities, despite their enduring appeal as an energy source, require modernization to ensure continued operation, enhance efficiency, adapt to evolving demands, and remain sustainable. Refurbishing existing plants proves to be a more cost-effective approach compared to constructing new ones, as 80% of the costs for new hydropower projects are construction-related. 🌊 Voith is currently involved in two significant hydropower modernization projects in Brazil. In Porto Colombia, the plan involves upgrading mechanical and electrical auxiliary systems, overhauling four 80 MW Kaplan turbines, and inspecting drive and monitoring systems. At Paulo Afonso, a complete replacement of all mechanical components, including valves, pipes, pumps, and electrical parts, is necessary. Voith's expertise in hydropower, dating back to 1870, has enabled the modernization of hydropower plants worldwide and the implementation of newly developed technology. Learning from nature and using the elements of the circular economy intelligently to create the most closed cycles possible is our goal. In this series, we show how we are already implementing the six elements of the circular economy – next up: Recycling and creating something new from the old. ➡️ Read more about the modernization of Paulo Afonso and Porto Colombia in our hypower customer magazine: https://lnkd.in/dFU3QCaj Voith Hydro

UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 – Affordable and clean energy 💡 Hydropower plants are one of the most efficient and sustainable energy sources in the world. And we at Bauer have already successfully implemented numerous such projects. Because we manufacture drilled, excaveted or milled cut-off walls for dams. 💪 This is how the power of rivers can be converted into clean energy – to reliably supply millions of people with electricity. ⚡💧 Hydropower plants are not only environmentally friendly, they also play a crucial role in the energy transition in water-rich regions such as India. #bauergroup #passionforprogress #bauerpower #bauerspezialtiefbau #sustainability #gemeinsamfuermorgen

Pale Powers Up with the #GreenEnergy Revolution! Big steps towards a greener future in Pale, as a €10M agreement was just signed to revamp the heating system in this municipality. The Minister of Finance and Treasury of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mr. Srđan Amidžić, and Head of the Office of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (#EBRD), Ms. Manuela Naessl, MBA secured €7M loan and a €3M grant by the #Switzerland, signed by Deputy Ambassador to BiH Mr. Siroco Messerli to make this transformation happen. We're incredibly proud that we contributed to this initiative through development of the comprehensive Feasibility Study and Conceptual Design of new: ↪ 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁: A new 10 MW biomass boiler plant will be constructed, increasing the operational efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions, with back-up on natural gas. ↪ 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: The existing heating network will be reconstructed with new heating substations, reducing heat losses and connecting current and more new buildings. ↪ 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: New software will optimize energy production and delivery, ensuring reliable and affordable heating. ↪ 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 & 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: A dedicated seasonal biomass storage with completely independent wood chips production which will ensure secure supply and save costs. Plus Minus Engineering & Consulting led the consortium partnering with Enova Consultants and Engineers in development of t conceptual technical design, financial, environmental and social assessments. This project is proof that bold, smart investments can bring immediate benefits to citizens while shaping a cleaner, more sustainable future. Hopefully, other municipalities will be encouraged to follow Pale’s lead, leveraging opportunities for cleaner energy solutions. 🌱
