"Winter is Coming" Surface and Climatic Effects on Game and Tactics 🍂❄️ Grass stops growing during the winter months, so grounds managers sometimes need to leave the grass a bit taller than usual. The higher the grass is, the more sunlight it is able to absorb, but if left too long light will be blocked from the base of the grass stems and it will likely turn yellow. At Turfcoach, we understand that maintaining a football pitch is more than just a seasonal task. As temperatures drop the playing surface faces new challenges. Turf health and performance can change rapidly impacting not only player safety but also game tactics. In cold weather grass growth slows making it harder to maintain a resilient and responsive pitch. Wet or frosty conditions can affect traction requiring adjustments in maintenance and preparation. For managers, understanding these changes means anticipating how the pitch will respond and how it may influence strategy on game day. At Turfcoach, we’re here to help you turn these challenges into opportunities with our insights and data-driven tools, ensuring that your pitches are ready for winter and beyond. How do winter conditions impact your pitch management strategy? What techniques do you use to adapt the surface for optimal performance in colder months? #turfmanagement #groundskeeping #winteriscoming #pitchperfect #sportsscience #turfcoach

The late February temperatures are making it feel more like late March. While the temp pins are in, to ensure season long success, it’s important that the turf is actively growing and can recover from the traffic it will be subjected to. For this reason, the Grounds Staff assesses course conditions on a daily basis and opens the course in stages at the appropriate times. The general criteria for each stage of opening is: 1. Course opens for play to temp pins in fairways - CHECK. - All snow has melted - No ice in temp cups - No excessive moisture from rain or snow melt 2. Greens open for play (stay tuned...) - Turf on greens has resumed growth - Ground conditions are firm enough to prevent rutting and footprinting 3. Full course opening with carts available (stay tuned...) - Sufficient turf growth throughout the golf course - Ground conditions are firm enough to prevent cart damage #isthisreallyfebruary #springhasarrived #golfseason #courseconditions #BeInIGC
