Lenzing Young Scientist Award 2024 #ionicliquids #lenzingyoungscientistaward #innovation The Lenzing Young Scientist Award recognizes outstanding scientific work by young researchers in the field of fiber and textile research. It is awarded annually and provides young scientists the opportunity to present their innovations and research on an international stage. Bachelor's and Master's students can submit their scientific work in the categories “Fashion and Circular Economy”, “Alternative Raw Materials” and “Textile Recycling” as well as in the field of “New Fiber Technologies” and face a jury of renowned experts from the industry. This year, the Lenzing Young Scientist Award in the category of "New Fiber Technologies" was presented to Ms. Carolin König (Institute of Textile Machinery and High Performance Material Technology, TU Dresden) at the Dornbirn Global Fiber Congress (GFC). Her master’s thesis, titled "Development of an environmentally friendly and sustainable solvent wet spinning process for the production of pure chitin fibers based on ionic liquids", demonstrated strong innovation and set an important precedent for sustainable fiber production using ionic liquids.

Dear Network, I am pleased to share with you a link to one of our latest published papers (https://lnkd.in/edDsTEVM). In this paper, we present a study that describes and explains the release of active compounds as inclusion complexes from biopolymers for various applications. The study is based on a model that incorporates thermodynamic and transport phenomena. Additionally, it considers the preparation of these compounds through solvent-free techniques using supercritical CO2. This work, which is supported by a wealth of experimental and theoretical evidence, represents a joint effort between the Universidad de Santiago de Chile (Alejandra Torres Mediano, Francisco Rodríguez Mercado, Esteban Quijada Maldonado) and the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Marina Patricia Arrieta). It is our intention to extend this collaboration in the longer term to encompass the development of new materials through sustainable processes, additive manufacturing and the circular economy.

In the Zernike Institute Advent Calendar, we are presenting 24 short spotlights in December. In these specials, we highlight PhD students, postdocs, support staff, and technicians of our research groups and team - providing a glimpse into their typical day at work. In Episode 7 meet Joël Benninga, PhD candidate within HyBRIt, which is a combination of two research groups: Macromolecular Chemistry and New Polymeric Materials (University of Groningen) and Professorship Circular Plastics (NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences). His research is focused on plastic recycling using unconventional methods, such as enzymatic or chemical recycling. The benefit of these techniques is that the quality of recycled plastic is equal to that of new plastic, which is not the case for current recycling methods. I'm thrilled to share that our latest research paper has been published in Science! Thanks to the collaboration with Ronghui Wu and the guidance from Po-Chun Hsu, we've developed an innovative textile designed for passive radiative cooling, even in urban environments with heat island effects. In this paper, we also demonstrate the thermodynamic analysis of the radiative cooling performance in different urban thermal environments. Key features of our textile include: 1. Selective emission through the atmospheric infrared radiation window with a specially designed top layer 2. Rejection of incoming thermal radiation thanks to a silver nanowire layer 3. Efficient heat transfer from the skin facilitated by a wool bottom layer 4. Excellent durability, mechanical properties, and washability This new fabric not only cools effectively in urban settings but also maintains the practical qualities needed for everyday use.
