As promised! Here is an excerpt from my journal of the first hike (of three attempts) to see the Cerro Torre in Patagonia, Argentina. I was not gifted with views of the peak that day, but nature gave me something even more powerful. Happy reading: I think heard it before I felt it—a resounding boom that reverberated through the very fibers of my being, unsettling and uncertain. My eyes instinctively scanned the glacial valleys across the serene lake, searching for signs of distant rockfall or an avalanche. Yet, the landscape remained undisturbed. A peculiar unease settled in the air, as if nature itself held its breath in anticipation. Then, like an approaching swarm of locusts, a hazy gray wall materialized in the distance. Swift and determined, it moved across the water’s surface towards me. I squinted trying to discern what this hazy gray wall was. It took a moment for realization to dawn but then it did - the water was being lifted off the surface of the lake and propelled fiercely and powerfully towards where I stood. The force behind it was not seen, but heard, as the wind gathered its strength with an impending roar. Just as the revelation that a wall of water and debris was nearly upon me, I managed to seek refuge behind a small man made rock wall, perhaps built for this very purpose. The fiercest wind, unlike anything I had ever experienced, wailed overhead and around me carrying rocks and water in its grasp. The spirit of the mountain roared, demanding I bow in her presence. My heart pounding in tandem with the building cacophony, I crouched on my knees behind my shelter, kneeling in respect and trembling. #adventurecoaching #backpacking #camping #lgbtqoutdoors #lgbtoutdoors #queeroutdoors #camping #adventurewithconfidence #hiking #patagonia

Happy National Take A Hike Day!! 🥾🗻⛺️ Today, we celebrate the joys and challenges of getting out into nature and taking a hike. Every November 17th marks national take a hike day. Taking hikes is a great way to get into nature. Researching native species around the area you live in and going out to spot them can make hiking all the more exciting. Remember to gather the right supplies! Water and hiking shoes not only make the trip more comfortable but also safer. If you’re here in Southern California, be aware of the following three: - Mountain Lions: If you ever encounter one, experts say to appear big and face them! Make a lot of noise if they approach. - Coyotes: Experts say to follow the same protocol as mountain lions. - Snakes: start stomping your feet to create vibrations in the ground and wait until they move. Never approach them. Though it might feel strange to fight the urge to run, mountain lions and coyotes use this signal from other animals to recognize prey. So stand your ground, big and loud until they go away. The United States has over 60,000 miles of hiking trails so make use of them! Comment with your favorite hike! 📹 : #TheAZHikeaholics What’s your favorite national forest?🌳🌲🏞️ Did you know Arizona has six national forests covering nearly 12 million acres? The forests in Arizona are unique, and I love them all. 🌲Coconino: encompass Sedona’s beauty, our tallest peak in the state, and thousands of acres of Ponderosa Pine + recreation opportunities 🌵Tonto: encompasses land from the Sonoran desert to the Mogollon Rim, from cactus to tall pines, embodying a Land of Many Uses. #TontoNationalForest offers a variety from the saguaro cactus to the ponderosa pine! 🌲Apache-Sitgreaves: encompasses forests above the rim with many forest lakes, great trails, camping, and pure beauty ⛰️Coronado: a sky island paradise! I love the mountain ranges this national forest encompasses and going from desert to pines from base to top 🌲Prescott: encompasses mountain ranges and land and offers so many options to enjoy the outdoors, from hiking to camping and even hang gliding 🌳Kaibab: split into two sections divided by the Grand Canyon: I love the north section for its high elevation and the sheer number of aspens #NationalForest #MyPublicLands #Arizona #ExploreArizona #VisitArizona
