Absolutely incredible news to hear at the seminar this morning. WE’RE GETTING AN APPRENTICESHIP! FINALLY, our industry will get the recognition it so richly deserves. Investing in the drainage engineers of tomorrow, educating people on just how important our ‘fourth emergency service’ really is. We are so grateful to the NADC PQMS Training Ltd and Energy & Utility Skills for their dogged determination over the past few years, behind the scenes, to create a pathway for new blood to enter our world.

According to a notice scheduled to be published in the Federal Register tomorrow (5/14), FMCSA is rescinding the requirements that carriers wishing to participate in the under-21 Safe Driver Apprenticeship Pilot Program (1) have inward facing cameras installed; and (2) register their apprenticeship program with the Department of Labor. These changes stem from Congress's directive in its March 9, 2024 Consolidated Appropriations Act that FMCSA remove these requirements to help bolster voluntary participation in the program. The inward-facing camera and DOL apprenticeship registration requirements were widely derided by many in the industry, and almost certainly contributed to the extremely low participation numbers to date. Can any of my contacts confirm that I’m reading the CG 5393 domestic installer apprenticeship handbook correctly, and that there is no practical installation unit. Does that mean zero practical training and assessment in the college environment? How does it work?

THE BEST WAY TO LEARN IS TO LEARN BY DOING. I CAN OFFER YOU THAT EXPERIENCE AT SFW. Apprenticeship is one of the most common and well-established forms of experiential learning. It is often associated with vocational training where a more experienced tradesman or journeyman models behavior, the apprentice attempts to follow the model, and the journeyman provides feedback. We understand this assignment. The SFW workplace foundational skills program feels more like an apprenticeship than a learning session. Each module is a relationship-driven learning model, based on actual day-to-day work, in which a novice gains hands-on knowledge from our experienced instructor to grow skills and act with increasing independence. Despite the Maryland Insurance Administration’s assurance that age is not considered in setting workers' compensation rates under any state-approved rating plan, young apprentices often face challenges when required to operate heavy machinery as part of their job duties. Recognizing this, Cecil County Public Schools, Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), and Utilitrain have joined forces to offer a virtual simulator to enhance the training of high school students aspiring to become lineworkers. There are 10 programs that can be ran to learn bucket, back hoe, crane, and heavy machinery. All 24 local jurisdictions in Maryland had embraced the Apprenticeship Maryland Program (AMP) by 2023. Notably, Cecil County Public Schools, which has seen significant growth over the last 18-24 months, celebrated a milestone today by graduating 30 students from their program—a fitting highlight to conclude the nation's first National Youth Apprenticeship Week! #YAW2024 #apprenticeshipUSA Dr. J. In this article for APSE Direct, our Chair Delia Cannings highlights how the Level 2 Cleaning Hygiene Operative Apprenticeship offers local councils the opportunity to invest in their cleaning teams at no extra cost. Apprenticeship Levy payments which might otherwise go unspent could be invested into upskilling local authority cleaning teams instead. Thanks to our colleagues at APSE - Association for Public Service Excellence for helping inform local authorities about this fantastic opportunity. #cleaning #localgovernment #localcouncils
